  • The field-of-view is weird. Seems less isometric and more top-down and too zoomed in.

  • As a Sorc, the design and animations of the spells suck. Chain lightning looks weak af and not fun/OP, like how it was in D2. Hydras in particular look atrocious, even the D3 Hydras looked better.

  • I constantly run out of mana, preventing me from spamming my main spells and enjoying playing as a Sorc. D2 had mana issues as well in the early game, but at least you could stock up on mana potions and have them available as a hotkey. Even without a mana potion mechanic, D3 was still pretty fun to play as a Sorc and you could still spam spells, but I'm just not getting that feeling of fun yet in D4. I cast a Hydra and a couple of chain lightnings and I'm out of mana, and have to go back to the lame main spell, which is very unsatisfactory.

  • The font seems cheap and not Diablo-y. Seems like they literally just used Times New Roman for everything, and I don't get why, just makes the game look like a cheap and generic ARPG that we've seen these past few years. The fonts used in D2R shows that the classic Diablo font still looks awesome, same with Project Diablo 2 with their new S7 graphics and HD fonts.

  • The music so far has been very unremarkable and again, not dark and Diablo-y. I miss the Diablo 1/2 music, the haunting guitar strums, the middle eastern desert themed music, the dark Indian chanting. Music play a big part in creating atmosphere, and that is missing from D4.

  • Same with other audio effects and monster sounds. Why are the Fallen no longer praising Rakanishu or Colenzo?

  • The new attribute and game mechanics isn't really clear. For starters, I'd like to be able to adjust my attributes like in D2, like say what if I wanted to try out a max-block build? Or one that emphasis on greater mana availability at the cost of vitality? The effects of items also aren't really made obvious. Like, what the heck is "Item power" on an amulet supposed to mean? Also, if I equip a staff that gives an INT boost, shouldn't the damage I deal go up? But I don't see the damage number changing when I swap weapons with different INT, does that mean INT no longer affects the damage? If INT still affects damage, what if I equip a weapon with a low damage value but high INT, would it be better than a weapon with no INT boost but high damage?

  • I miss the old transparent overlay automap. With the new one, I find myself constantly checking the big map and switching out, because the minimap is too zoomed in and kinda useless (why can't I zoom it out?)

Overall it's been pretty unsatisfying and not worth the hype for me. I'll begrudgingly complete the campaign though since I bought the game, and go back to playing PD2.

Legitimately almost made my spill my beer xD

Yeah, AAA titles have been absolute trash in recent years. I've just been on indie games and a total simp for Paradox Interactive (sorry, I love grand strategy games) for quite a while now.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago

I mean paradox games always have some issues but they are also great regarding gameplay, you can spend 1k hours in a paradox 100 bucks (game + some dlc) game. In difference to a game for 70 bucks that is bug ridden and wants to sell you "micro" transactions for stuff that should be in game by default where you play at max 100 hours.

Thats gaming nowadays when you buy big company games...

love my Slime rancher, my fatorio and my rimworld. All developed by tiny studios or just one Dev, 100 times better than nowadays AAA games and they work with the community.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

For sure, I am pleasantly surprised at how relatively bug free the experience was at launch.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah from what I've heard it actually runs at least decently and the in game shop is actually only cosmetics... When i think of Diablo 3... Or... Well lets just not talk about the mobile game...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

70 bucks now is significantly less than $60 was in the SNES era when some games were ALREADY going for 60 bucks. Not to mention $40 Atari games in the 70s...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I've really been enjoying it....

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Same here, though I'm only able to play an hour or two a night (dad checking in) and am only around level 30. I played the beta and the server slam and have tried a few classes. I agree that the camera is too close but I'm constantly impressed by the build variety - Diablo 3 was lacking in that regard and while I lived D2... it obviously wasn't very friendly to experimentation last the early stages.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Me too! I'm torn due to the monetization, but damn if it isn't a fun game. My only real issue is the scaling: since the world levels with you I never feel like I'm getting stronger.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Sad to hear you don’t enjoy it. Personally I am having a blast with it. I love its much darker gothic look than D3 (which was very cartoony). The music is just amazing good. And the map is ridiculous big (I guess bigger than all 3 previous games put together). Technically the game is also extremely well polished. Didn’t encounter a single technical issue so far (playing on PS5). The only complaint I have is that they enforce an permanent internet connection (even if I see the reason why - it’s kinda a MMO). I almost feel put back into my youth (yea I am old), where I spend hundreds of hours with my friends in our garage to play D1 in multiplayer mode.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

I'm on PC and enjoying it so far as well (sitting out my first "server issues" ordeal right now though lol). I'm making myself stick with the bone necro I started with and plan to try something new each season. I'm enjoying it enough that I want to give myself that "new game" feeling several times over by saving classes and builds to try over the next several years. For now, I'm learning the mechanics and pushing this bone necro as far as I can. The end-game content options feel pretty solid so far. I'm only level 54 though, so there's lots of room to grow.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Also, if I equip a staff that gives an INT boost, shouldn’t the damage I deal go up?

Int raises All Res in D4. You can see what each stat does by hovering over it.

A lot of your combat pain points are solvable with gear in endgame (effects still won’t be flashy tho). Pretty sure D2 early game consisted of chugging mana potions non-stop until you got the Tal Sth rune word for your helmet. Which really isn’t all that different from spamming Basic attacks until you get aspects and talents/skill in D4.

Honestly it sounds like you just wanted Diablo 2 (2023). Nothing wrong with that of course but I don’t quite understand why you wouldn’t play PoE then. That game strikes a good balance between modern and old school while also upholding the more hardcore nature of D2.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I used to play PoE and enjoyed it's early iterations, but the recent updates have been a mess. The game has just become an a almalgamation of too many things, and has become cluttered. I am looking forward to PoE2 though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Any ETA for PoE2? I remember seeing trailers for it years ago, they released videos showcasing new skill/gem systems and how it'd be a slower paced game with less spam... then nothing for years really, has it run into issues or sth?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

The first new footage in 2+ years was just released today in the Summer Game Fest livestream.

This youtube link has the footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDXcGEo1TfU

I don't have an exact timestamp, but it was after the start, immediately after about 15 minutes of Mortal Kombat -- I think it was the second game showcased.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Is there any expectation that PoE2 is anything but large-ish patch to the original game? I haven't seen anything that says to expect any significant differences from the current game.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I think the main points are

  • overhauled animations
  • new skill gem system
  • new 7 act campaign
  • 19 new ascendencies

Beyond that I don't think there's much information available, at least not until Exilecon 2023.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I haven't been following that closely but from the early trailers I thought they are pretty drastically changing the combat/skill system. Showed it on some bosses and early areas too.

Mind that I don't really expect them to change the game in a large amount, they dont wanna piss off the existing players. I was mostly wondering what's the current extent ot poe2 and why is it taking that long

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Exilecon in July should have more information on PoE2 (and PoE Mobile which sounds like it'll be neat.)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Woah cool seeing a reference to PD2 here on beehaw already when I've only just joined. I'm one of the devs for it, glad you enjoy it!

I've been playing Diablo 4 with a different mindset, treating it more like a non Diablo arpg and with that I've been enjoying it. The story is better than previous Diablo games and the gameplay is decent (though I agree that resource management makes me use the basic skill way too much). I also agree that the music isn't quite as good as D2's. It's a bit over hyped for sure and the MTX skins on a paid game sit wrong with me but for a generic arpg, it's not a bad experience.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Woah, great to see a PD2 dev here - thanks for all your efforts, PD2 is still the best Diablo I reckon!

BTW (not sure if you'd know), now that Reddit's gone to shit, are there any plans for making a PD2 community here (maybe on lemmy.ml since Beehaw doesn't allow custom communities)?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

I don't moderate the subreddit much and most of our communication happens on discord but I can see if we can set something up on lemmy at some point

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

What level did you reach? I feel like a lot of these problems are solved by better experience and understanding.

Not all of your criticisms of course unfortunately, but they're not relatable to me at least. I've really enjoyed the experience.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Does it have that boring cartoon look of III, or is grit at least back?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Cartoon look is gone for sure. Art style really seems to nail what most people were looking for in a Diablo game.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

That's good, at least. Maybe later I'll consider pirating it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

No butterfly disney villains this time around.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

For the mana (essence) make sure you are taking advantage of essence buffs in the skill tree as well as watching for armor/jewelry/weapons that will assist with rapidly recovering essence.

Also look online for sorcerer builds to see what other folks are doing and what skills they are using for not only leveling, but also for endgame.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Personally I've really enjoyed it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

When I can play it (or rather, when it’s playable), it’s pretty decent. My problem seems to be that the PS5 version apparently has some connection issues. So I spend most of my time lagging.

[–] Headless3638 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

PC is having login issues right now, they posted a notification in the launcher about it... Sigh.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Only 71 hours to go!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I watched MrLlama's (popular d2 speedrunner) videos about d4 and decided I will most likely hold out for a sale or deep deep sale before I get the game. From the sounds of it d2 is still just straight up superior in most categories. Especially with the new remake making it look almost as nice. And since I still have d2r and still haven't gotten my enigma yet, why not go back into to it?

If anything d4 has made me want to play d2 more lol. I am glad people are enjoying d4 though. Much different song and dance this time around than when d3 released.

My current biggest gripe is that I am fearful Blizzard is somehow going to take a perfectly functional game and somehow ruin it, since it is a live service game after all, and it is Blizzard. Thus the wait for a sale.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Enigma

Yep, been playing this game for two decades and have yet to see a Ber rune drop lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm liking the game so far. I'm a level 49 necromancer, currently going through act 3.

The field of view looks diferent, but I'm enjoing the enhanced verticality of the maps. I was amazed when going down a moutain for the first time during the beta, and now in act 3 the dunes look so cool due to that!

Regarding the stats, I had to read up about their effects because I was also finding somethings odd, this is a good explainer: https://gamerant.com/diablo-4-stats-explained/ I would love if D4 implemented a system, lore adequate, similar to what death stranding has where there is an encyclopedia of game mechanics where everything is explained.

(Only now am I noticing, in the screenshots on that website, that they have popups when you mouse over the stats explaining things, never noticed them given that I am playing with the Xbox controller on my living room PC :o)

There are quite a few new systems ingame, its a diferent game from D3 wich was a diferente game from D2, for better and for worse.

I'm enjoying learning those new systems and playing within their restrictions.
