The app has not been updated in more than a month and LJ also has not been active on lemmy and this community for nearly a month. Is he okayยฟ?

Back when he did sync for reddit, i remember he disappeared for quite a long time(i think half a year or something) before coming back and did a rapid fire of update. In that period of hiatus a lot of post similar to this one pops up too.

I was more worried this time because this is a full time gig so his absence could not be explained by him focusing on his day job

[โ€“] [email protected] 36 points 10 months ago

He's right. LJ has a habit of coming and going. It's nothing new.

[โ€“] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Sync was always a full time gig. The company was incorporated some 10 years ago, LJ didn't have a full time job for quite some time.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Hmm. I did not know that. I thought sync started as more of a side project

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

It very well might have, but then really 10+ years ago. LJ was still doing a PhD for some time during the development, but finished in 2018 or so I believe.

With the way the Lemmy community treated him for releasing a "non-FOSS" app, I wouldn't be surprised if he bailed. I would've.

[โ€“] [email protected] 35 points 10 months ago (1 children)

FOSS users the vegans of software.

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

Nah... The loud foss users are like vegans. Plenty of us are quiet and actually donate to foss groups.

[โ€“] [email protected] 24 points 10 months ago (1 children)

FOSS is lemmys greatest strength and its biggest flaw. Too much foss nerdery on lemmy and it's boring the average folk.

I wouldn't say boring, I'd say frustrating. You cannot use Lemmy for any kind of tech support if you're not using Linux or FOSS software.

If you make a post asking for help with a software you need, someone will ignore you and tell you to use some garbage ass incomparable FOSS version. Use anything not Linux? Use Linux, idiot.

You pay for YouTube premium because it's $5 per month using the family plan, and you're okay with paying a few bucks for entertainment? Go die from cancer. Actually, though, someone called me a racist and a Holocaust denier for saying I pay for YouTube premium since I split it between my family, and it's pretty damn cheap. Their comments were heavily upvoted and mine were downvoted.

Lemmy genuinely isn't fun anymore. It's so incredibly toxic.

Oh ya, don't forget the fuck cars community telling me it's my fault my city doesn't have great public transit? Like bro, I moved here a year ago. This city was built hundreds of years ago. How the fuck is that my fault?

You were probably initially downvoted for generalizing and the fact that Google is already doing fine for servers and barely pays creators.

[โ€“] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

And that's a great reason to call me a racist Holocaust denier! And it's great to see their comments get a ton of upvotes, too!

[โ€“] can 10 points 10 months ago

Yeah, no argument that the other commenter went completely off the rails.

[โ€“] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Yeah Capitalsim bad - every topic, capitalism bad.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Lmao that conversation is mental where did you find that guy?

Not to mention the fact that many people don't know what FOSS means, given that it's not used widely outside programmer circles and nobody ever defines the term.

I'm still hoping we get more of the general population on lemmy to help it grow, rather than only be filled with programmers.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

With the Lemmy community not being that big, the circle jerk tends to be everywhere. I personally am really turned off by the extreme and open xenophobia.

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

Nah, he didn't care about that at all. Had some lengthy discussions on the topic on the sync discord.

Agreed. Possibly even assassinated.

Or even worse: forced to be a mod on reddit

[โ€“] [email protected] 29 points 10 months ago

Classic sync post haha

He's gone to Vegas. He's not. But he is probably taking a break. Those late nights and early mornings take their toll, not just on health and well-being but relationships too. Make sure you take a break too.

[โ€“] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago

Thats good to hear. I thought he was ill or something. Yeah better to take rest than get burnt out.

[โ€“] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago

It's only been a couple of weeks since he last appeared on the discord - maybe he just went on holiday for a couple of weeks.

I wouldn't worry.
