The first one I would think they were just kind of atypical at writing, like: "congrats," I said. As if they were writing a story.

The "your" is the most harsh, haha.

I read them as following:

"I" never said we should kill him.

Someone else said it.

I "never" said we should kill him.

I didn't say it.

I never "said" we should kill him.

I just thought it.

I never said "we" should kill him.

Someone else ought to.

I never said we "should" kill him.

It's just a possibility.

I never said we should "kill" him.

What did we do? We could have given him cookies.

I never said we should kill "him".

Someone else though.

The third one can be inferred as "I didn't say the words" as I inferred it.

Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?

The said thing can also mean you heavily implied it, but never said it. Alex Jones relies on that a lot, saying he never encourages offensive violence, then goes on diatribes about how you're already under attack and they're coming to kill you now and yes God should be the one to kill them bur also God uses men as instruments of his will so maybe if you feel like you're an instrument of God's will you're probably right.

Also the version I learned was:

"I never said he stole my money."

In this version every one of them gives the idea that the accusation of stolen or somehow maligned property occurred, except in the case of never. That one is just straight up denying most of it.

I got stuck on "should", this helped.

clever!

did anyone else read them all aloud?

[–] [email protected] 49 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Hope you didn't do it in public?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

I kinda mumbled them at first, but I must have had too much fun and said the last one too loudly, because now the TSA would very much like to know who my intended assassination target is, who got killed in stead and whether I have any bottles of liquid.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I didn't not read them all aloud.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

So... you did?

Show someone 100 years ago that this is something someone wrote with full seriousness, and that it's grammatically correct. I wonder what they would think of us and our state of language.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

Mark Twain would probably applaud the cleverness

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Yeah go lie to someone in the past to make them mad about the future.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 10 months ago

Doing the same for the phrase "I didn't say you were stupid" is a common rhetoric exercise.

I didn't steal a hydrogen bomb.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

i read bomb as bong and had a double take

[–] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago

Joke on "importance of proper stress/emphasis" with original phrase "I never said she stole my money". One of the cooler parts of languages like English.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Why did I read every line out loud in my head?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

It's impossible not to.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago
