They adopted "alt" right because they didn't like the sound of "extreme" right.

Call them what they are, fascists.

To be honest "Nazi" works just as well, and it's easier to spell.

The problem that I have with the word Nazi isn't that it isn't accurate but that it allows them to argue that they aren't members of the Nazi party and are therefore not Nazis. I think it's important when you're arguing this point to be accurate and not allow room for that pedantic argument. They will never address your point if they can address the word you're using.

s/nazi/fascist/g

The problem that I have with the word Fascist isn’t that it isn’t accurate but that it allows them to argue that they aren’t members of the Fascist party and are therefore not Fascists. I think it’s important when you’re arguing this point to be accurate and not allow room for that pedantic argument. They will never address your point if they can address the word you’re using.

Their whole deal is that they don't act in good faith. Restricting our language based on what they will accept is their objective in raising these disingenuous arguments in the first place!! They will never address your point, period.

Ok...but why give them such a simple out when you can use the correct, generic word, "fascist", instead of the incorrect, specific word, "Nazi"?

You are not acknowledging the actual argument I am making so excuse me for labouring the point, I don't know whether or not you understood what I am trying to say to you. Let me say it more plainly.

The exact argument you are making against "nazi" also applies to the word "fascist" which refers to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Fascist_Party . Both words originally referred to political parties, and both words now have additional meanings. One is not necessarily more correct than the other, and fascists are not going to accept either term, so there is no point in asking them for their opinion.

To address the point in your last comment a second time, it does not matter if you give them a simple out or not. The things we say do not matter to them. The things they say do not matter to them. It makes no sense whatsoever to worry about giving them an out, because we cannot force them "in" no matter what we say. They are never "in".

Fascism is a psychological defense mechanism. You cannot argue these people out of fascism. The only thing we can do about our loved ones who are falling to fascism is try to make them feel safe and secure again. Calling them out is largely counter-productive anyway, though often we must for the protection of others. They must be reached on an emotional level. There is no label or careful selection of words that will cause them to have sudden self-awareness.

My point was pretty hidden in hindsight, you probably didn't even notice my editing of your quote for rhetorical purposes.

If we are done, then why are you wasting my time with passive aggressive comments?

You never addressed my point that the fascists are also FAMOUSLY a political party so... We're not done, we never began.

Didn't realize it was amp thanks :)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The article doesn't mention "alt right" although that can definitely be inferred

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago

Just call it what it is. Alt right = fascists.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I have also inferred a nutty political ideology, but the article specifically states the police have given no motive.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Per this CBC article, police have described it as "a hate-motivated incident related to gender expression and gender identity."

God knows why this AMP link to a CBS story was submitted to a Canadian sub in the first place but it's not a good article.
