Memorial to "rif is fun for Reddit" Android app, aka "reddit is fun", shut down after June 30, 2023

Seems that someone at Reddit decided to grant read access to RIF, this morning I opened the app just for kicks and it wouldn't load anything. Well I tried again after lunch (Europe CET time) and it could access the front page but I was logged out. Trying to login shows a different logon page and even with valid credentials gives out a 'Bad request' response.

That means they are not just feeling the heat, they are probably burning really bad.

Nah. Absolutely fuck Reddit. I paid for RiF, I'm happy with my contribution. Used it for 12 years. Sadly removed it from my home screen this morning when I saw it was over.

I absolutely refuse to provide reddit traffic, even if it does now show content. If the reason it's showing content is really due to reddit backpedalling, then fuck them, because they're ONLY doing it now that it's affected them. A little late for that.

I'll return to reddit only if they reverse this API shit, and if spez gets the boot. Until then, I'm done.

I'm curious why you would go back? I'm totally happy on Lemmy. There are some growing pains but it'll get better and I think there's already plenty of content. Lemmy doesn't need as many users as Reddit, it just needs to hit a critical mass to have enough content to keep you busy and I feel like it's already pretty much there.

Lemmy today and Lemmy a week ago are night and day! Content has already reached 2014 reddit levels of activity. Besides the different UI, I wouldn't know I left.

Lemmy on 12 June was extremely sparse. Highest upvoted posts maybe had 50 votes and "active" and "hot" showed posts from up to 7 days prior. Now it's so much better with the amount of activity.

I only joined about a week ago but I've noticed a big difference too. I regularly see threads with over 100 comments and that's plenty of engagement for me. Since this is an open platform there's no entity trying to hack our brains to maximize engagement and get you addicted, it can just be a healthy discussion for those who want it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I was here then as well. I created a new community, created a post, it got a random upvote. Turns out that simply making a post meant I made the front page of lemmy.world!

Each day the fediverse has gotten almost twice as busy as it was the day before. I feel like within another two weeks I'm not even going to miss reddit at all LOL.

If you want something with a UI similar to Apollo as well, try wefwef, it looks just like the Apollo Reddit client but for lemmy instead. I’ve personally been using it since changing over to lemmy and it’s honestly so similar.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Most my reddit time was spent in gaming communities for specific games and lemmy seems to be lacking in that department currently

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh I have no intention of going back, though I am actively avoiding engaging with Reddit at the minute. I mostly meant in terms of accepting a reddit thread link in a Google search sort of thing. I don't intend to be an active participant again.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Oh I see. Yeah unfortunately there's a lot of information that can only be found on Reddit. There are some questions I searched for and the only results with good answers were on Reddit. I think minimizing engagement is good enough

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I'm still on both, on Reddit using a revanced modded copy of Sync for Reddit and I will use Sync for Lemmy when it launches. But I'm spending more time on Lemmy because it feels better here and the discussions are more interesting to me.

There are only 25% of my subscribed subreddits with equivalents on Lemmy right now, but with time that will grow and I expect I'll drop Reddit entirely. Fuck them anyway.

Only reason I'm still browsing is because I was able to get Sync to still work with that mod, Sync is my version of Reddit and I said I'd stop using Reddit if I couldn't use Sync so I found a way to use Sync still.

I'm leaning more toward "incompetence" as the explanation for this. What good does it do Reddit to leave RIF intact, but simply disallow logging in?

Reddit's value depends on content creation and interactions driving ad views. Read-only RIF users create no content or interactions with the site. And for many like me who purchased the premium ad-free version, we see no ads.

Admittedly, I'm not sure if the RIF ads in the free version are Reddit's own ads or not, but without the content creation, and the interactions driving more engagement, RIF does little but drag on the site.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The ads in the free version are rif ads, so that revenue would go to talklittle. That was one of the sour points of the API change; anyone utilizing the API aren't allowed to run their own ads. So not only was the new API absurdly expensive, but reddit was also blocking 3PA developers from getting any revenue outside of subscriptions

[–] jscummy 5 points 1 year ago

So Reddit is now getting nothing at all from RiF and the dev still gets ad revenue? Brilliant move

[–] cosmo1517 15 points 1 year ago

Not good enough. My reddit account is gone and I have no intention of coming back.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Eh, I'm removing RiF from my homepage, probably wont delete the app though (too sentimental lol). There's no point in using the app if I'm not able to be logged in and make comments to communities. I'll just leave reddit behind me.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

u/talklittle is working on rif for tidles. I'm curious if it will be a new app, or an update to the existing.

And will he change the name to TIF?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Now all I need is an invite for Tildes haha.

I wonder if talklittle is interested in creating a client for Lemmy as well? Perhaps he could go back to naming his app Lemmy is Fun much like RIF used to be called before Reddit threatened removal of apps that didn't change their names a while back.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It's going to be called Three Cheers for Tildes

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

the creator of another app, realy for reddit, said the ban goes in to full effect on the 5th, after the weekend and the 4th of july holiday.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

I already uninstalled RIF.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Interesting. Though without my sub reddits it feels just like classic social media; force fed.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

For what it's worth you can still put your favorite subs in the sidebar by starring them and have easy access. Honestly lurking with rif is a much better experience than using the first party app

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Leave reddit instead of giving them traffic

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I will try that just yet. It would be nice to hear from the creator of RIF and see if he condones any of this.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

The rif creator recommended we come to lemmy.world. its why i am here.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Thanks for posting this! I opened RIF this morning to see what would and I was surprised to see that it seems to still work (I didn't try logging in). I hope it's what you described and not some kind of mistake that's going to cost RIF millions of dollars!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I redownloaded just to check and I was able to login and can see current content. It did give me an error when I logged in and sent me to the reddit website for a second before I backed out and then all my communities showed.

Between reddit and twitter being insane I have no idea wtf is going on.

ETA: Okay I'm not logged in anymore but all my comms are still available. I do not think reddit is sober anymore and should consider a twelve step program.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can confirm. I can use RiF right now 🥺

I will still lessen my reddit time as I lost trust on the platform

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or... rip off the bandaid ftw

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Occasionally, you run into a link to reddit; I'd rather see that link open in RiF than the browser or Reddits own app, to ensure no ad money gets sent their way.

Edit: nvm, doesn't work.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Maybe the clue is in the author's name :)

TalkLittle.

Very little now.

I don't think anyone has changed their minds as such though - apart from the 429 error it hasn't stopped working for me at all.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Just came here to say this. Was getting the error when I woke up this morning, went back on just now and got the log out / web version show, then refreshed and back it was. I wonder what's going on!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

I can definitely browsee reddit with rif while logged out. Can't imagine what this accomplishes for reddit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Maybe they can still say " oh hey look our traffic/requests are high"? They lost some valuation late last week so they might be looking for any way to indicate that the number of people/ access requests aren't dropping.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Read only use is hardly good though, that's just coating them money. You want engagement from users to drive ads.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, noticed the same thing. Strange.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

personal guess is that they're trying to continue to tempt people over to the official app. given that rif has a lot of power users, they're probably hoping that they'll give in when they want to interact with content

or idk could just be a total bug

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The argument was that API requests cost them money so we may as well hurt them financially a bit by continuing to browse on RiF. Spez can't do anything right 😂

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Not a good sign if we literally can't tell if this is a galaxy brain strategy or a technical failure.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

too little too late

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago

jokes on them. i hasn't logged in to reddit since i deleted my account a year ago. literally only use rif for read only mode to watch videos. dont login access to post cos most of reddit are retarded so trying to have any kind of conversation with them is impossible.
