Yea, the Nazis were famously short on oil. They badly needed USSR's oil fields.
Explanation: Despite the post-war reputation of German science as ZE FINEST IN ZE WORLD, during WW2, much of the logistics of the Nazi military was handled by horses. Very, uh, high-tech?
Their logistics situation was a little fucked, especially once they started eating the horses on the Eastern Front.
Science, industrial capacity and logistics are related but ultimately separate. Being good at one doesn't guarantee being good at the others. Oh and driving your best scientists into exile won't help either.
