The same Alan Turing who was prosecuted and punished for his homosexuality after his amazing accomplishment, which was a crime in Britain at the time.

He was chemically castrated and stripped of his security clearances. It's widely believed he took his own life through arsenic, although him being poisoned wouldn't be a huge shock with the way he was treated.

Make sure to celebrate pride month a bit more for him. He deserves all the love

Alan Turing? Alan “I was a major key to winning World War 2 and yet they still chemically castrated me in 1952 as an alternative to imprisonment as a punishment for ‘homosexual acts’” Turing? The guy who died at 41 years old and never got even a peep of an apology and whose government only apologized in 2009? The guy who queen Elizabeth II only pardoned four years later in 2013?

This guy did so much for the world and then they threw him in the garbage because he was gay.

It's strange how many could shrug off the genocidal crimes of Nazi scientists, all while doing this to one of the creators of modern computing just for acting a bit gay... Condoning murder while condemning love...

The polish had largely reverse engineered the enigma machine, they gave their notes to bletchley park, and Turing refined their codes using more notes gathered by the french

Not to undermine the genius of Turing himself, but crediting the enigma cracking to purely him is a disservice to everyone involved in that endeavour

This is true. It was very much a team effort.

Happy pride month, Alan Turing

Did you hear about the hero in the British government who did amazing work in winning a war the British viewed as existential, but killed himself over charges of "criminal" homosexuality? What? No not Alan Turing. You mean it happened twice? The other guy.

A Nazi, you say??? We have use for a good scientist! Give him a government position and a research grant!

A gay??? Well, we can't have that kind of evil roaming free! Blackball the bastard and ruin his genitalia!

I think she invented the smallpox vaccine.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Uhh that’s wrong… she invented smallpox

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

No, I remember learning about it at school. She found that people who caught cowpox (which was mild) never caught smallpox (which was deadly), so she took some stuff from a cowpox lump and injected it into a boy called James Phipps, who then, despite her best efforts to repeatedly infect him with smallpox, remained smallpox-free, therefore inventing the first vaccine.

I thought that was Steve Jobs
