Merz is bending over backwards and in German media he is openly talking about how it is hard to make Trump understand fundamental things like who started the war in Ukraine or now with Merz being forced (difficult as conservative politician) to take an explicitly antifascist position, because Trump doesn't (want to) understand how the world works.

I don’t like Trump at all but this is just a clickbait title. They were specifically talking about D-Day and Trump first asked Metz, “That wasn’t a great day for you?”. Yes, Trump then said “this was not a great day”. My reading is Trump was basically saying the D-Day wasn’t a good day for the Germans and or Nazis but his syntax is so fucked that I could be wrong.
That was dementia talking, not NAZI sympathies. That should have been the thrust of the article. Of course the article should have no thrust, not being an editorial, but I've given up on journalism.
