lemm.ee is shutting down at the end of this month

Hey everyone

We’re really sorry to say this, but lemm.ee will be shutting down on June 30, 2025.

What you need to know

As of now:

  • New user registrations are disabled
  • Creating new communities is disabled

What you should do:

  • You can export your settings at https://lemm.ee/settings to take them with you to another instance.
  • If you're moving to another instance, consider adding a note to your lemm.ee profile with your new username. Your old profile will still be visible from other instances even after we go offline.
  • Alternatively, if you want to delete your lemm.ee profile, now is the best time to do it, so the deletion can federate out before we go offline.
  • If you're one of the folks supporting us with a recurring donation, please remember to cancel it (Ko-Fi donations should have been cancelled automatically already). Our leftover funds are already enough to cover our bills for next month, so we can keep things running without any more support.

Because of how Lemmy is built, everything posted on lemm.ee will still be accessible from other instances, even after we go offline.

Why this is happening

The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.

The sad reality is that while there are a lot of great people on Lemmy, there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join.

We know this sucks. We're genuinely sorry it’s ending like this. Thank you to everyone who spent time here and helped make it better.

Refugee from Lemm.ee here. Thanks for the welcome. Happy to join. I've been looking for an instance that is based in Europe, has decent privacy, isn't de-federated from too much content and has some resilience (i.e. won't shut down like Lemm.ee in a couple of years).

based in Europe

Yup. Hetzner in Germany to be precise.

has decent privacy

Will I ever spy on you or sell your data? No. I'm a big proponent of the GDPR and will do everything I can to comply fully. That said, if you want perfect privacy, you’d need to host your own instance.

isn’t de-federated from too much content

Only instances that are clearly malicious, such as those dedicated to spam, trolling, misinformation, or illegal content (including Holocaust denial and Nazism) will be completely blocked once discovered. No defederation happens because of politics or moderation choices.

and has some resilience

Hetzner is a pretty reliable hosting provider. Running this instance currently costs me about €20 per month. As long as costs remain reasonable, I plan to keep it going. It’s my way of supporting the Fediverse and promoting better social media and a better society. :)

Awesome. Thanks.

Do you have a team? Or is this a one-man-show? i.e. if you have to drop this some day then will others continue this instance?

I'm the only admin atm. Currently it's not a lot of work. But if it's growing I'll get more admins onto the team.

There are already a few mods in the country specific communities. Join our mod team if you have some spare time!

If I'd be forced to drop it, I'd know people who could potentially take it over.

You're welcome! :)

Thanks, a couple of questions if I may: What’s your federation/defederation policy? In what country is the server physically hosted? Are you the only moderator of the instance?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What’s your federation/defederation policy?

Instances that tolerate bot spam and illegal stuff get blocked. However, that was rearly the case up until this point.

In what country is the server physically hosted?

Germany (Hetzner)

Are you the only moderator of the instance?

Moderator no. Admin yes. But I have a backup person in the background in case that I'm not able to manage the instance anymore, temporarily.

Thanks. A few more:

What’s your stance towards the lefty instances (ml, lemmygrad, hexbear)?

What does pub mean or stand for? Public? Pub as in the beer drinking place?

Is europe.pub affiliated with the pubeurope mastodon instance?

What’s your stance towards the lefty instances (ml, lemmygrad, hexbear)?

I'm fine with them as long it's legal stuff. I'm pretty far left myself (although no tankie).

What does pub mean or stand for? Public? Pub as in the beer drinking place?

Like the pub yeah. Basically where people come together. I thought it was a cool name.

Is europe.pub affiliated with the pubeurope mastodon instance?

No.

Great, then I think you can count me in!

In fact, I realized I had already created an account (as ceiron) and later deleted it. The problem is that if I try to sign up, it tells me the user already exist, but if I try to log in, it tells me the user has been deleted.

Any chance you could look into that and either restore or delete my user for good? Thank you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This isn't possible, unfortunately. I suppose I could do it in the database directly, but I fear that this could mess up federation, since your user probably already got federated with other servers. Can you choose another one?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Actually there is no activity at all linked to that account, which is why I ended up deleting it. So if you can remove it directly from the database it would be great. I don’t understand how it can be in this sort of limbo where I can’t use it to login nor to sign up as new user - looks like a bug, no?

I think I was able to restore your account. Can you try to log in?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You got it! First post with the new account - thank you!
