Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Haven't watched anything on how good the game is but it seems to review fine so far? Any of you tried it yet? With randoms or friends?

Nope, the second I learned they decided to go with loadouts instead of letting me fully customize a build I lost interest.

I had the exact same thought process. Part of the "you only get hit if you make a mistake" ethos of all FromSoft games, in my opinion, is giving the player full control over their character, from stats to gear, to aesthetics even - I thoroughly believe (although purely anecdotally) that allowing me to define my character is a massive part of immersion and even performance (I care more about the stuff I make than the stuff other people made in a ludic context).

I feel that this shift toward a purely multiplayer experience with rigidly defined play options lacks every reason why I've played and enjoyed playing FromSoft games so far.

Even Armored Core VI, with its mission-based gameplay and lack of an overworld, feels like it lands closer to Elden Ring/Dark Souls/Bloodborne in terms of player trajectory and freedom than it does to Nightreign.

Edit: as a concrete example, my nonsensical Elden Ring build. I have a lot of Dex, not enough Vig nor End, and dumped way too many points into magic stats, and I barely ever use magic. But I'm well on my way to finishing my first NG+ and have pretty much soloed the entire game with my busted build (no player summons, did use Ashes in some very annoying contexts). I love my master of nonsense character, I've significantly overleveled my nonsense character because I enjoy the extra challenge my stupid build imposes on me. And, yes, it makes just as little sense at level 285 as it did when it was but a twinkle in my eye.

That's a very fair stance. You're more personally connected to the gameplay if you've been involved in the creation of your character. I guess it makes sense that a more curated, online experience only provides prebuilt characters since you need to be able to rely on your teammates and don't run the risk of them failing simply because they chose a suboptimal loadout or don't know how to make a good character overall but an option of a full-customisation queue would be cool. Those who'd want that could play like that, those that don't just don't

Yup! Have nothing against Nightrein, maybe (hopefully) it'll serve as a sounding board for new ideas, which will then be introduced in Elden Ring 2, or something, like DS2. I'm not opposed to multiplayer in general, either, but I'm also hyperindependent by nature and kinda' hate knowing others depend on me, because I know I technically suck at playing games - I like to let my intuition take over when building characters or playing the game, which seldom seems to resonate with other players.

Edit: well, nothing against it as long as they don't fully lean into the multiplayer/games as service shtick trend and focus exclusively on that from now on...

It's a fun time. I've mostly been playing with friends, though had a good run with randoms as well. I like the quick nature of the runs, I like the strategy so far. It lets me play an archer viably, which is a real nice time.

I haven't and I was just wondering it is any good. I watched a streamer before release and it just seemed ok. My graphics card couldn't handle elden ring very well so this is mostly to see if i should have FOMO 😅

I guess if you're into soulslikes and also like multiplayer, this could be pretty fun. Nothing you should feel FOMO about imo, though, since it's not a huge mainline game. Same goes for Duskbloods

I finished watching this video when i had asked in the wrong thread and i think this probably wouldnt be for me unless i played with friends. I'm already not super into multiplayer games and while i understand the design choices, it just doesn't appeal to be all that much

Yea going into it with two buddies is probably the best way to go unless you're fine with relying on random people. Totally fine to skip in my books

I'm probably going to pick it up this weekend. I played the network test and liked it. I've got a few friends who will hopefully pick it up because it's going to be way better with friends on discord but at least it's not a full price game either way. Seems like a fun game to work through I was able to beat the first boss with randoms in the network test.

40€ is definitely a fair price for the game. All the better that you have people to play with

Yeah I get that it's not for everyone, it's different from their single player stuff but I think I'll probably play it enough to get my money's worth out of it. But I am hoping I can get at least two friends to pick it up
