Cultural carryover from Reddit where they use trees because /r/marijuana has a shitty mod.

Using the word tree to refer to reefer predates reddit culture. Idk why. Best guess is our ancestor's lack of creativity regarding slang terms and it's a leafy plant.
When fully grown, they do resemble small trees

It's a native plant there. I wouldn't really say it's a weed. It is farmed throughout Asia for fibre, food, and drug... What other weed do you know of that is such a major agricultural cash crop?
“trees” is a common slang for marijuana.
e.g. “'Cause when I smoke out, I hit the trees harder than Sonny Bono” - eminem
Anything that was once illegal will have nicknames that survive into the future. For example, hooch.
