Who the fuck watches that piece of shit character and thinks he's the good guy? Humanity is fucked.

Man, wish we could have cool villains without constantly having these Baby's First Media Literacy conversations

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Maybe if literacy were actually taught instead of being sabotaged by what I can only assume is a plot to increase the pool of incarcerated slave labor we could then move on to more advanced forms of literacy.

a plot to increase the pool of incarcerated slave labor

It's not just that; it's also a plot to increase Republican voters

I mean, they glorified the punisher. So this isn't surprising.

I haven't seen the show and barely know the Marvel character, but even as a violent killer/vigilante, he's far from the monster Homelander is, right ?

Or did they make him racist/homophobic/patriot/etc to appeal the "alt-right" viewers ?

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 week ago (4 children)

as far as i remember the punisher is basically a violent anarchist vigilante who kills anyone he deems a criminal, including corrupt politicians and cops. so basically they missed the point of the character.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 week ago

Yeah, his targets are usually so vile that nobody questions his methods.

For anybody that wants to be the punisher though... like honestly if the punisher has gotten pulled into a problem he's less an angel descending from heaven and more of a fire burning through absolutely everything.

Like everything needs to be in a state of fucked for him to get involved. Absolutely fucked. Isn't it better to avoid that in the first place?

In the new Daredevil, Punisher is captured by MAGA cops (effectively) and he just scoffs at them.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

They are very different, one is completely self serving and the other is self sacrificing. They both kill, one indescriminately and the other very descriminately. Punisher also doesnt seem to enjoy it, but feels it is what needs to be done.

Funnily enough, there was a multiverse thing called 2099 with a bunch of characters in it but like cyberfuture or whatever, had Spiderman 2099, Hulk 2099, and Punisher 2099, among others. Punisher 2099 kills (and tortures) criminals, absolutely refuses to fire on cops, and when Doom 2099 takes over the country, becomes his flunky and starts using thought crime devices.

The issue Doom takes over is marvelous. The US cabinet gets purged of the self serving criminals. Including an alien maskerading as a human.

Yes. Still have it somewhere. And did not all the 2099 comics have that in that month? I lived 2 hrs drive outside Oslo (Norway), where the one comic book store was located, and reliably getting comics each month back then was at times just dumb luck.

Or did they make him racist/homophobic/patriot/etc to appeal the "alt-right" viewers ?

He is none of those things, and fairly antithetical to them, so alt-right viewers love him anyways because they have no media literacy

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I doubt anyone actually thinks he is a hero, they just like seeing the world burn.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Some people think burning the world down is somehow heroic.

The scary part is they're not all MAGA, or even conservatives.

Gen X did this

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Seriously though. I feel like this whole “people think homelander is good” thing is manufactured.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Same, I am more and more convinced most "culture war" shit is.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There’s a lot of it made to specifically spark outrage. There are lots of culture warrior goof clowns out there for real though as well.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Homeland er is super MAGA, so....

Yessa, MASA.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The show makes fun of the MAGAs, but the real ones are too stupid to undestand it, thinking that the show's Homelander fans are correct.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago

They made it way more obvious in the most recent season. That's why user reviews are more mixed. It was finally obvious enough that they caught on.

Trash humans be trash.

We all love to dunk on reactionaries, but there is no final right way to interpret media.

According to "death of the author" literary theory, any reading that can be backed up with the text is valid. These valid theories may contradict each other and even the author of the work. (please don't confuse multiple valid readings with silly relativism that any reading is as good as any other, that's a straw-person argument).

Death of the author is valuable and useful. This is how many classic media have been reinterpreted to take on queer readings for example.

[–] lastunusedusername2 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fair enough. But thinking Homelander is the hero is a good sign a person is a sociopath.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's important to let them tell on themselves though

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

everyone can have their interpretation.

It's just a Rorschach test.

Is someone sees homeowner as a hero, that person is likely dangerous

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Homeowners be monsters, y'all.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

Homeowners are aight. Landlords, however, are the monsters.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

there is no final right way to interpret media

There's no definitive right way, but there are definitely definitively wrong ways
