I am once again here asking for a product, fully expecting with yet another “you probably won’t find a Canadian alternative for this”. I was surprised with the smartwatch + fitness tracker options last time, so I think this might be worthwhile too.

Does anyone know of an energy monitoring plug? Too many of these are made in China by Chinese and American companies, so I’m hoping to find alternatives here.

Ideally, I’d also like to hook it up with Home Assistant, and either via Zigbee or Matter. If it’s WiFi-only, that’s fine too, but preferably not, cause I don’t want to add more WiFi devices on my network, if possible.

Not Canadian, but I use IKEA's smart plugs. They are ZigBee compatible, the Dirigera hub can be used offline and one of their plugs can track your power usage.

Oh! I forgot that IKEA has smart plugs too.

Do you have to get the Dirigera hub though? I tried looking around and there’s not much info about the TRETAKT and HA, only a few Discus threads where people suggest using zigbee2mqtt or ZHA with quirks (and it does seem like the quirk is in their repo), but no mention of whether they had the hub.

My understanding is that you don't have to get the hub, you can use it via ZigBee directly, but it won't get any firmware updates without the hub.

Just put it in its normal pairing mode and it should show up in your ZigBee tool.

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I’m getting some then :)

Yw! Also IKEA returns are super chill anyway.

They have a ton of stuff, I wish they had smart dimmer switches, the kind you put in your wall. Lmk if you know of one that's ZigBee compatible :)

Unfortunately I don’t :/ I’m renting a place after all, so I’ve never looked into in-wall switches or outlets. But hope you find one there!

Sinope is Canadian and have zigbee smart plugs. https://www.sinopetech.com/en/collections/all

They will try to push you to their platform but their Zigbee stuff is well supported in Zigbee2mqtt and ZHA.

have you used much Sinope? they definitely feel like they are targeting the 'premium' service levels.

I have the heavy duty relay on my water heater, their water main valve and a bunch of leak sensors.

They are not cheap but the build quality is good. And you probably won't find many Canadian, energy metering outlets that will be priced cheaply.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Oh interesting! But dang it’s pricey! $40+ for a smart plug!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

And their products are actually made in Canada?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

not canadian made, sadly, but i use some sonoff outlets, and they work great for me!

I read that you can flash some of those with ESPHome if you don’t want them tied to their OEM. I don’t have the tools for doing that though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

You can.

You can also flash them with homebrew code if you want (I've done one just for the experience)

At this point buying Chinese made in China or perhaps European made in China might be the least bad option. At least they're cheaper and less money goes to an American multinational tumor. But you gotta make sure it's actually safety certified. I have some ZooZ Z-Wave units, but I've also been eyeing Aeotec.

Indeed there is a Canadian alternative.

DLink is a Canadian company, been around forever.

Here is a link to their single smart plug. They have other plugs as well as tons of other stuff. Routers, cameras etc etc.

According to Wikipedia

D-Link Systems, Inc. (formerly Datex Systems, Inc.) is a Taiwanese multinational manufacturer of networking hardware and telecoms equipments. It was founded in 1986 and headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Damn I always thought they were Canadian and had their stuff made in Taiwan or China.

I’ve heard many say DLink’s a Canadian company but I guess we now know it’s Taiwanese. So I don’t blame ya there for mistaking it.

That said though, DLink is mired in controversies, and in my experience using any of their devices, they’re pretty terrible to use.

I am showing my age. I used to buy off them (client requests) for various products but that was 30yrs ago.
