Fediverse vs Disinformation

1309 readers
4 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

science: change conclusions based on new evidence

GOP: start with conclusion, throw away evidence that doesn't support it

That said, science has remained consistent on this issue for at least a decade.

Jeez I mean if they cared about it this much I would think that maybe they would be upset if that research didn't get to their hands, I mean they must have just not seen it otherwise there wouldn't be a weird silence about it right? How could any of their genuine concern make sense if they were just silent when the research didn't fit the particular narrative they had prepared?

Maybe we all need to print out copies of the research and do the kind thing and bring it to their door to remind them the very important research they ordered is done!

print out copies of the research

they never cared about research or proof or anything other than hating anyone who isn't white/male/straight/cis/evangelical R voters who are >2nd generation pure murican. excluding native americans of course.

they are dehumanizing these groups of "other," and they just don't care how wrong the research says they are

Fascism has always been inherently anti-scientific.

Bravo, Americans. What a sad banana republic you have become.

I'm actually surprised they didn't just fake the results.

If you read the article and between the lines a little, this was instigated by a Republican who actually supports trans people and believe they should get treatment, but was later silenced by the rest of his party.

  • 2022: Gov Cox gives his support for treatment of trans people, based on evidence.
  • 2023: Gov Cox capitulates and "temporarily" bans the drug, in lieu of a report he commissions looking for evidence.
  • 2025: Report is released and supports trans people, other Republicans denounce it, Gov Cox does not comment.

Gov Cox is clearly having his arm twisted behind the scenes here. That doesn't excuse him - at best he's compromising his morals and putting his political position first - but I think it's important to frame it accurately here rather than jump on a hate train and paint everyone with the same brush. Victory is had by winning people over to your side, not by making everyone an enemy.

Oh, thanks for the explanation!

They'll just ignore it anyways, just like they did the extra gerrymandered district maps.
