Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

But the advantage is that Lemmy allows Tor. 😅

You look at usernames? I've never done that here or on Reddit.

Even without usernames. There is some people i recognize by topic, opinion and the way they express themselves. If you spend too much time here that isn't difficult.

Some people here have a really huge effect. Guys like Stamets, The Picard Maneuver, and MicroWave, I see their posts all the time.

When I first joined, I saw The Picard Maneuver so often that I thought it was a community, not just a single user.

Its impossible to delete anything on the fediverse

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I think the internet at large should be viewed this way and the Fediverse is no exception. It’s almost impossible to completely get rid of anything that isn’t under your direct and immediate control - i.e. your own personal email server. I don’t assume that Lemmy/Fediverse is any different.

That said, with the effort to be ”not Reddit” or just another social media platform ready to be potentially abused, focus should be placed on privacy and user ownership and their ability to control their data on the platform.

The place is a Village rather than a City.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago (7 children)

your privacy is worse on lemmy. anyone can access all your comment and post upvotes and downvotes. your pms are open for server admins to read. both examples need to be fixed imo

Who needs anonymity? I put my real name, address, social security number, and agenda in my profile. Ha ha. you see no agenda because im just a typical earth man with no agenda of course. lol.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago

Some people actually use the tag feature so that they remember users when they see them again lol

I also like that Lemmy has a displayname field separate from the username and it allows you to make it cooler than just boring plain text. 😏

It's also not only about upvotes here.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Os it? I don't remeber a single user lol

Flying Squid (what happened to that user btw)
The Picard Maneuver
Kolanki @ yiffit
cm0002
PugJesus
ClinicallyDepressesPoochie

And a lot more I can't name, but I instantly recognize.

And there are also some infamous users that I will instantly recognize as trolls, but I'm not gonna turn this thread into negativity.

Certain subreddits used to be like this.

But all my favorites have taken one of two paths:

  • Get algorithmically deprioritized (due to a “bug” as an admin told a mod), and hemorrhage users. The collective ‘intelligence’ of the sub in particular drains; interesting intellectual discussions are gone. One such example: /r/localllama

  • The sub gets huge. Bots repost memes and bait as attention farms. It doesn’t feel like a small town anymore. Deeper discussions drain away in favor of shallow repetition of the same things over and over again. One example of this for me is /r/thelastairbender.

Jokes on you. Post less, remember less.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago

I see all of the same names in like every thread here haha. I remember y'all too. I know you are all freaks

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Also because it allows anyone to easily stalk all your comments for some reason. Creepy.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago (13 children)

I wanna be stalked! Someone, start stalking me right now!

Can I be the guy that's known around town for pointing out that in the given context, it's actually "fewer users"

And yeah yeah, I know about evolution of language and common usage, and all that crap. But it really does just boil down to the fact that fewer sounds more elegant when the object is plural. ie: "There are usually fewer unexpected costs associated with new home ownership", vs "There is usually less unexpected cost associated with new home ownership" (Both are correct in their given context)

It's about how language rolls off the tongue. If we lose that we might as well grunt at each other draw pictographs with our own feces.

/end of rant.
