My friend and I are working on his house network. We wanted to ask y'all for any suggestions on simplifying the setup. The current setup is as follows:

  • Cat5e running throughout the house
  • At the end of cat5e are a bunch of different routers (all with different wifi names & credentials, lol)

The idea we have is:

  1. replace all the different routers with POE APs (requires getting a POE switch). All the routers are pretty old at this point.
  2. remove the wifi extender and add a hardwire a connection to an AP in its place
  3. Remove the old intermediary injector

Something maybe like

We thought we'd ask the experts here before committing to any specific setup (UniFi is appealing). There are about 20-30 devices on the network at a given time, with the rare weekend where there could be 50-60. Ideally the APs would have good enough range to get some signal in the yard of the house. Our ISP is Xfinity with around a gig down.

We have no plans for security camera setups or plex servers.

Thank you!
