A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Honestly, that's the smart thing to do. Staying risks being sent to the El Salvador megaprison.
We're going to see an exodus of foreign born students and it's going to hit college towns hard.
Not nealrly as much as electing Musk did. (Since this is just one symptom of it)
Foreign students often pay more tuition if I’m not mistaken
and university actively seek them out too, without they suffer financially. in the west state uni are suffering from under-enrollment so much they have to cut back classes and staff as it is, due to the lack of career development job search during covid. this will just add on to that.
MUCH more.
Many times more, in some cases. If foreign students don't come, then schools will have to charge everyone more. And they need a certain amount of normies footing the bill as there just aren't enough rich bitch students to make up the slack. If they price it out of reach of normies they're slowly fucked.
With a probable closing of Department of Education soon we're also going to see the elimination of Pell Grants probably. So basically colleges are about to be gutted.
Which is the Republicans long held goal. They need less college educate people, not more.
Yeah they wanted to hurt the elite universities - but they missed their targets and will instead hurt all of the third tier state schools that actually have low enough barriers to cater to everyone.
They do, also it's a wider talent pool and more chance of recruiting the best and brightest.
its mostly because they pay alot more as a non-citizen and out of state, "the best student is usually secondary" its all about the money. as a non-student if you do post bacc at many state university, or 4 year, it cost alot more to attend classes, no discounts compared to be an undergrad.
And American ones who see the danger and have the means to go abroad.
UK here. Proud of our UK, Gambian citizen that he understands what's at stake for him personally. There's no point in being abducted and disappeared without trace, get the hell out of there if you're at risk as many of the persecuted did when Hitler was doing the same in Germany.
Man we are breaking bad so hard it’s giving me whiplash
Shameful. I have kids that I wouldn't feel safe sending to these institutions even though they are American citizens.
Did Cornell work with Trump on this?
Unis confirmed/likely working with ICE:
- Columbia University - (I heard is run by a banker, instead of an academic and is chasing easy $$): betrayed their students (more than one)
- New College of Florida - fired a Professor over skin color/race (wouldn't ever consider Florida anyway). Per commenter below, it was the proving ground with Chris Rufo
- Yale - 3 Professors fled Yale Interview with one of them
Unis that claimed didn't work with ICE:
- Minnesota State University-Mankato - Student disappeared, uni says they didn't give ICE any info, unrelated to protests, no reason given
- Tufts University - claimed didn't work with ICE, student disappeared by ICE
Maybe different reason?
- Indiana University - Admin has been taken over by MAGA, they disappeared a cybersecurity professor
- UIUC - Had multiple students charged with mob action before the election. Possible theory: maybe political pressure by alumni, Isreal, or democratic party (see below comment for more)
Wonder what other institutions of higher thinking/learning will be next to capitulate...
i doubt they are going to touch yale/harvard/standford any time , because those are usually the pipeline for students to >politicians via prestigious MD and Law schools, or business programs. even the MDs from these colleges tend to be elistist asf with respect to employment.
A student got disappeared in Mankato too

I totally understand him, the Americans, Russians, Chinese, North Koreans in the end are on their own to fight against their authoritarian governments.
it’s beyond demoralizing and unsettling to stay in a country that perceives you as a ‘national threat’
