I'm still figuring out how I'm going to set up a planted aquarium, after last having goldfish as a kid about 30 years ago. So forgive my naivete!

On that other big social media site, there's the AquaSwap community where I see a bunch of folks local to me in NYC are trading/selling/buying all manner of aquarium stuff (fish, plants, hardscape, more).

So for my friends on Lemmy: do you participate in trade with your local community? Where are they? Are they only on that other website…? Meetups? Mailing lists?

There are a few very active Facebook groups for freshwater fish/aquarium info and trades in my city where a lot of that goes on, and people go in together on larger direct fish orders. But not sure how that would work in a city as large as NYC.

I hadn't even thought of that. I mostly go to local shops and conventions. Store owners will sometimes either trade or give store credit if I want to bring in healthy plants/fish (if the fish are in demand, not all fish are).

I noticed that Aquarium Co-op has a buy/sell/trade forum but they specifically only allow fish/invertebrates (no plants or decor) because they don't want to mess with their core business.

Facebook marketplace tends to have all sorts of aquarium stuff from people getting out of the hobby or moving, etc.

Some local fish shops have posters when trades will happen!
