A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted, clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts: 1

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
    • If you feel strongly that you want politics back, please volunteer as a mod.
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.

The theater I used to work at had a light up marquee sign in the back that displayed captions in reverse. Then they'd hand out these little semi-transparent plastic sheets on flexible arms that you could clip to your arm rest. So just adjust the plastic until it's in your field of view and reflecting the marquee in the back, and you had subtitles cheaply and without bothering anybody else.

If they had the subtitles on a real screen and projected the movie screen and room behind the subtitles via a headset display... Would that be AVR?

My boss has AR glasses that transcribe conversations in real-time (more or less).

That’s absolutely amazing. I’m happy to hear that kind of thing exists for people.

I mean, they have closed caption devices you can borrow. They fit into the cupholder and display captions for you.

Those are horrible. The captions are down there, and the movie is up there. And sometimes the arm goes limp and you have to prop it up again. And where do you suppose I put my drink? On the floor?

[–] [email protected] -5 points 2 days ago

Why would you have a drink?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, you absolutely do not want that.

Next time your in the theater, shine a torch on the seat, and then imagine it on your face.

Definitely don't bring a torch into a movie theater. You'll set off all the fire extinguishers and get kicked out.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

That might be the only way to make it clean again though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Indeed. It's slightly less dangerous and more fun to just yell, "FIRE!"

lol I did not think about pink eye or consequences from sharing of the device. I’m happy to hear the technology exists though.

Evenrealities has glasses that I'm sure could accomplish this. With the added benefit of not getting pink eye.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Enjoy your pink eye

Doesn't BigScreen have this feature? I've not used it recently. Or are you describing something where the moviegoer puts a headset that just displays the subs, transparent for just the screen?

Gross would be the name of the theatre chain
