/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Even before it became common knowledge that Elon Musk was a twat, I found the way the media fellated him to be egregious.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 hours ago

They were paid to 100%. A twat like that hires entire companies to manage his public persona. At least until he started to take matters into his own hands more and more

[–] [email protected] 22 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

How funny would it be if they did a George Lucas and just edited the audio to remove Musks name.

Elmo would be so mad. His ego wouldn't be able to take it.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Feels like they at least have to add a warning like this:

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 hours ago

I really like the sentiment behind that warning. Especially the last line.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 16 hours ago

I fucking FORGOT about that part lol

[–] [email protected] 30 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

How much do you think Musk paid to get his name dropped? I bet you he paid too much.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

He didn't have to pay for that back then. He was worshipped by the rich pseudo progressive people, meaning modern Star Trek producers and writers.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

He even was in the second Iron Man, because back then he was viewed as a real life Tony Stark. That was before he openly showed what a fucking bigot he was

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 hours ago

He was in there because Marvel used locations from his companies for filming, and that was (at least part of) his payment.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 15 hours ago

Back when he had a PR team.

[–] [email protected] 155 points 1 day ago (20 children)

Man it was really stupid (and cringe) of them to talk about musk in discovery. And it aged terrible lol

[–] [email protected] 81 points 1 day ago (1 children)

OMG yeah that reference aged like a Cybertruck.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 hours ago

That would mean not at all, or is it because blew up in their face? Or because the reference just didn't work? Or because it's stupid, man this line of yours has layers.

[–] [email protected] 59 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They could have at least read up about him if they were going to name drop, it was clear if you paid attention back then how bad he was, though it was more understandable for someone not paying attention to not know

[–] [email protected] 44 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Jason Isaacs improvised the musk part in hopes of getting a Tesla

He mentioned it in an aftershow

[–] [email protected] 28 points 21 hours ago

I’m gonna keep believing, he said that because he knew he was from the mirror universe.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 21 hours ago

The dumb fuck.

and this is the exact reason why trek shouldn't use real life (living) people in its lore.

one week they're the messiah, the next they're a pariah.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

Hawking didn't age poorly.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (2 children)

It's from 2017, right? It was very clear Musk was an idiot back then too.
Maybe not as comically evil as he is now, but still.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Everyone acts like we collectively only realized he was an idiot like 2 years ago. I remember when I first heard about him in college around 2016 I didn't like him even then. His ego was clearly apparent and his "progressive persona" was obviously a persona.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 hours ago

I remember back in 2014-2015, working the night shift and watching a video about Elon, which gushed about him being an entrepeneur, and found it really strange to make all the claims about him being a fantastic person just because he ran a business.

This was peak hyperloop hype, which was also very odd to me, as I remember reading a pop-sci magazine a decade earlier about Swiss metro, which was the same idiotic concept, but with less cool graphics...

[–] [email protected] 14 points 13 hours ago

The cave rescue thing was 2018 and it's often brought up as the turning point in people's perception of musk, so fair enough I guess?

[–] [email protected] 25 points 23 hours ago

Stamets is named after Paul Stamet, who's one part legit mycologist researcher, one part mushroom cure-all, woo peddler. He at least has the sense to compartmentalize his books. "The Mushroom Cultivator" remains the goto, soup-to-nuts book on cultivating mushrooms.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 21 hours ago

as long as the real people actually invented a device and that's all that's mentioned I'm fine with it, but praising real people is just a bad idea.

I just watched this series in the last year and I remember scoffing when I heard that, lol I had no idea what was coming.

Also being kinda new to Star Trek, is there a joke about Frakes? My wife and I always joke that when an episode makes no fucking sense, it was directed by JFrakes, and I wonder if its something like a joke among trek fans

[–] pancakes 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Usually the more complex and deep episodes are Frakes. When you see his name as director, you know you're in for a great ride. It's probably partly because he's ST royalty so he can push the envelope and doesn't need to play it safe for his career.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago

His episodes make no sense at all in Disco, which is saying something for a show that makes no sense at all, but his ds9 EPs are pretty good.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 21 hours ago

He tends to pick up more oddball or funny episodes. In this case, he actually didn't direct that episode. Felt fitting and needed something to tie things up on a more positive slant.

[–] clay_pidgin 80 points 1 day ago (4 children)

It's pretty risky to name drop a living person, and they did it just to seem a bit more modern.

Doesn’t explain how Tilly attended Musk Junior High School, though.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Musk "Junior High School", or "Musk Junior" High School?

Musk has like a thousand kids...one of them might turn out to be worthy of naming a school after.

You think Khan Academy is named after Ghengis?
