Freedom fries have entered the chat

[–] [email protected] 42 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If I remember correctly the freedom fries became a thing when the French criticized Bushes war in Iraq.

Indeed. That was over 20 years ago. But Republicans were already master hypocrites back then.

And don't forget that the Dixie Chics got canceled hardcore for coming out against bush. I don't think they ever recovered.

I remember all the radio stations in Texas refused to play their music. Bush was such huge asshole and he was my governor. He fucked Texas up so bad and yet they made him president also by a coup by the way. Al Gore won.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago

Yup, typical cpnaervatives doing literal canceling while calling any criticism of them as 'cancel culture'. Bunch of projecting hypocrites.

Hard to say what the arc of their careers would have been. But it absolutely cut the band's career short. They did go on to be moderately successful individually at least IIRC. I hate most country music of the last 30 to 40 years. They're absolutely one of the few outside Johnny, Dolly, and Willie I respect.

People that think Trump turned the republicans party into the garbage pile that it is will be surprised to know it started much earlier than that. Trump just recognized he could use this garbage pile to gain power.

I was working for a place that sold ice cream and had one of those signs you need a long pole to change the lettering on to advertise various things. We'd just put up one for our French vanilla ice cream the day before, and by the day after we had so many angry calls that we changed it.

Absolutely mind boggling.

It's so infuriating because those first 2 things technically are woke in the original sense of the phrase. It was never supposed to have a negative connotation, it just meant having your eyes open to the ways of the world and having a discussion about how to improve them for everyone. How did we let that get twisted into something we want to avoid at all costs?

Not we, its the ruling class

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

And they did it because people started to point out that Jesus was a social justice warrior and there really wasn't much they could say to counter that uncomfortable truth.

Fair point. The next target is DEI, people already get defensive when things are called DEI as if its a new slur

For fascists, demonstrating blatant hypocrisy is a way to flex their power. They're not ashamed of it; on the contrary, they revel in rubbing it in our faces.

But you see one of them is about erasing ingenious peoples history (the Mexica/Aztec) - where the other is about forcing PoC to look at racial stereotypes - so one is cool and fun and the other is woke and bad 😤

They were pretty smart.

I had a couple Republicans at my work a year or two ago who were adamant that renaming a local small body of water from [Racial slur against Native Americans] Lake to [Native American term for a type of body of water] Lake was “re-writing history”. They alleged a vast conspiracy including the Aunt Jemima’s syrup and other rebrands. They really do just believe whatever their programming says their in-group is believing at any given moment.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

I'm sure the natives had a different name for the lake. Perhaps we already "re- wrote" history, by stealing the lake and renaming it in the first place?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Doesn't matter how many times the imperialists re-write history though....right? As though it was originally called what they call it. That's their gaslight.

Rules for thee but not for me

The motto for every right wing authoritarian nut job is always the same, "I want to be king of the universe and say and do whatever I want and everyone should serve me"

The Gulf of Mexico is too politically incorrect for all the snowflakes, apparently. It needs to sound whiter.

I don't know the right label for it, but I don't think it's quite hypocrisy. They're mad when names are changed out of respect for another person. Any action like this out of consideration of others is "woke" to them. It's an unnecessary display of weakness to change something because it offended someone to them. What we're doing now is changing a name out of spite, a blatant disrespect, which is an action they value. Saying "fuck you Mexico, America deserves the name" is better than "people are offended at the name redskin so now we need to come up with something else" to them.

They're such gross people...

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

This is really the root of my issues with Trump and Trumpists.

Like, the whole policy sucks. But it's rooted in disrespect. Complete lack of respect and tact in all regards. Of each other and of the system itself. Incredibly selfish. Not just Trump but the people who support them. My 5yo is better behaved, and that's saying a lot.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Im summary, it's a "Fuck you" rather than a "Sorry, I'll change it"

When Aunt Jemima became Pearl Milling Company

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I did not even know that. A better solution is to just say no to corn syrup products. Actual maple syrup tastes much better

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

When I first heard Pearl Milling Company was the new name I balked. It sounded like a fake “old timey” name.

Turns out it was actually the original name of the company before they switched to Aunt Jemima! Oh and Aunt Jemima wasn’t even their original brand creation, they appropriated it from posters for a vaudeville show.

Hypocrisy is a tool of the GQP

Don’t forget that mountain.
