It's barely noon and I'm ready for bed.

People that take too much require an exhausting amount of energy to defend against. By the time I'm done protecting myself, they've usually got what they want anyway, it sometimes feels like there's no point

You’ve got the choice of who is in your life and to what extent.

It’s a little bit complicated when it’s family. But you still have the choice, on a long term scale.

I know that feel.

I used to be surrounded by the type who answers "no" with "I don't take «no» as an answer". Eventually I started cutting them off my life, and things became so much better. That included a fiancée, a few "friends", and plenty acquaintances. For family the only serious case died so I didn't need to.

For the ones still in my life I make sure that they never get what they want if they insist past a limit. Asking again to be sure, or if conditions changed, is fine; but if you ask again because you want to tire me down, I'm probably boycotting what you want, and I don't care if I sound petty. Eventually they learned when to back down.

I'm almost 30 and can happily say I don't have to do that too much because I never talk to those people, ever. As Tyler, The Creator says: Fuck em'.

Welcome to AskLemmy. A community in which you can ask questions. What is the question you wish to ask?

If it’s just general complaining or thoughts you may be better suited with c/casualconversation or another one like it.

This is redlemmy.com not lemmy.world. Feel free to read the sidebar, and if you're still confused, ask a moderator for more info.

It's off-topic but I feel like this is the best of what the Fediverse has to offer: same basic "purpose", different rules, different vibes.
