Until they can get laser projectors to match the brightness of at least older oled, I just can't use it as a main screen. The picture quality is great on a lot of them, just not bright enough to use in a windowed room.

It’ll never happen even if they get super bright. Can’t get darker than the thing it’s being projected on to. Contrast ratio will always be lacking.

I use a projector for my main entertainment display in a windowed room and when I find myself somewhere with a good large 4k screen I'm very aware of how much deeper the blacks are and how it's just a bit sharper on the tv. I don't mind trading the image quality for having it mounted up and out of the way though.

skip this advertisement by inserting the Lowes Christmas 24 Dildo into your ass and maintaining a fully-powered state for at least 5 seconds

You're welcome, world. I just bought a 4k TV!

Is there even any 8k content to miss out on?

[–] sugar_in_your_tea 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

There's barely 4k content to miss out on. I guess there's UHD Bluray, but many (most?) streaming services find some way to not provide 4k. My internet can barely handle 4k, 8k would obliterate it.

Who can even tell the difference between 4K and 8K when you're sitting a normal distance from the screen?

Samsara was the first movie to be scanned in 8K. It's stunning in 4K, so I think I would also enjoy it in 8K.

For me the only 8K content i tried on a VR display is just cranking up a game to 8K wich looked really good but also showed the textures and model geometry is not ready for that and also the games i tried ran at very low frame rates. But when i wasn't moving around i could see very far, very clearly because of the amount of pixels per degree. I tried the witcher 3 and resident evil village maxed out. Running on a 3090. Village was insanely good looking but it was using all of the 24GB of Vram of the 3090. I really liked the visual settings in village. For me 8K on a VR display is more about having a big panel separated into small windows that all look clear.

I've heard at least one japanese TV channel offers 8K content from time to time such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, which has an incredible native resolution because it was filmed with a NASA camera. Other than that, I haven't heard of anything.

It was shot on 65mm film stock, that's why it still looks amazing.

If they have MXC in 8k - all in

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago

Right you are, Ken!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

YouTube does have 8k support and a handful of 8k videos

Is there an ongoing project to achieve more-real-than-real image?

[–] skulblaka 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How about "less real than your current 4k TV because projectors look like roasted ass outside a movie theater"?

Seriously. Projectors are cool. Do you own windows in your home? Don't buy a projector. Watching stuff on it outside of perfect darkness sucks way more than just having a regular TV.

And honestly, once you’ve gone OLED you won’t go back. They’re that much better.

How about a dreamatorium in a linen closet?

Best we can do is drugs on a park bench.
