Is it because I'm on lemm.ee and this community is lemmy.world? I'm very sad because I really want to share my wife amazing cooking.

lemm.ee will only let you upload images up to 100kB: https://lemm.ee/post/25065

Try uploading to an external image host first like catbox.moe or imgbox.com, then linking that here

100 kilobytes?

What is this, the nineties?

They have an explanation in the link - they effectively don't want you hosting images on lemm.ee, as it has the potential to scale out of control for server costs. Whether that's reasonable or not idk, but I can see where they're coming from. Even though my server doesn't have an upload limit, I personally just post all my images to catbox.moe in the meantime until we get some more data on how Lemmy scales.

So, uh, how does everyone in here get a nice big image to see, but mine is just a link?

Click 'edit' on your original post, then put your image's URL into the "URL" space and save.

There's actually no difference between using an external image host and uploading to lemm.ee in terms of end result - all image posts on Lemmy are technically just URLs that are filled out.

For whatever reason that only seems to work properly for me when I post using the connect app. Just saying!

Sorry I just saw how you posted it - you posted the link to the image's webpage but not the direct link to the image itself. You'll need to right click the image and e.g. "Open image in new tab" or "Copy image location" or something so that you end up with a link that actually ends with your image file, like this:

https://images2.imgbox.com/4f/6c/yf5t7SiE_o.jpeg

catbox.moe doesn't do the image page thing and will just give you a direct URL, if you find that easier.

Oh snap! Thanks again! I'm still trying to figure out this Federation-ness-izm stuff lol. I really want lemmy to take off (to a point, because fuck the mainstream runs everything), but it needs to get just a teensy bit more user friendly...

We are all aware, thanks for bearing with the ongoing development of the platform!

No worries. There's always some small-dick-energy bitches wherever you go. I just try to remain positive, throw some shade, and block. Let them drown in their misery- my life is pretty good regardless of their shitty attitude!

Thanks for including the link because for some reason I couldn't get to the direct image, it just kept loading the page again. Next time I'll try catbox!

Depending on what you are using the web ui, or an app should parse the image from the link. You can try using https://squoosh.app/ and really shrink down your image without real quality loss.
