>Not a country

>Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken badly about and deliberately mistreated Puerto Rico

>Donald Trump also routinely speaks extremely badly about the country Puerto Rico is in

I'm glad he's changed his mind at the literal last minute, but it baffles me every day how ignorant people can be.

Petition to restart [email protected], by the way.

Every time I make the mistake of visiting that sub, I want to smack the mod who locked it. I don't even know if his grievances were legit, but clearly the only people he's hurting are the folks who would like to post to the sub.

Edit: Are .world Admins aware? Do they have a position on the situation? Do they give a crap? Anyone know?

[–] [email protected] 49 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

We're aware. AFAIK, nobody has expressed interest in taking over that community and bringing it back to life.

@[email protected] would you like to volunteer?

[–] [email protected] 64 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It's funny you should ask that; I was just about to reach out to ruud over Matrix and have been thinking about it for a couple weeks. I'd love to if that's alright with the admin team.

Maybe he just ran out of the paper towels Trump threw at him the last time he was in PR. Now he had a spill to clean up and he’s finally mad.

There, that's the official motto of trump supporters.

Florida is filled to the brim with Hispanic folks that love Trump. It makes no goddamn sense to me.

It makes no goddamn sense to me.

Cuban expats that are vehemently anti communist.

Cuban expats that are vehemently anti communist.

And who have apparently assimilated so well into US society that they have no idea what communism actually is anymore. A democrat vote is still miles away from anything even remotely resembling communism.

When I was a teenager that started follow the politics of the US, I was extremely confused about the Republicans calling the left liberals, because our liberals were center-right.

It took me a few years to stumble upon the Overton window (without using that name at that time).

Man, the US really is getting its mileage out of the Red Scare.

I’m going to guess they’re into theocracies.

Conservatism.

How much sense does it make for poor people to support Trump? Or women?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Hey listen, poor people can support women all they want.

joking

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 weeks ago

Another reason is that Hispanics (like many minorities) are on average both more religious and more socially conservative than the general population.

My dad was African Caribbean with a heavy accent who got citizenship after decades in the US. At times, legal, at time illegal, as the system is quite intentionally broken. After ALL that experience, being repeatedly treated with racist attacks by cops, bank tellers, and who knows how many else, that's just was I was around to see happen. Anyway, he was VERY pro-trump. Mostly because he was juvenile, and liked he could say a few lines of whatever Trump was saying and it would piss everyone off. He just loved it.

Nicky Jam, 'She's hot!' -DJT

Trump didn't even know who you were dude. Glad you pulled support but fuck you.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I know of a handful of other Latin Americans who still want to vote for the fucker. They can't articulate why they'd vote for him other than a vague economic reason, even after reminding them of all the heinous shit he spews about people who don't look like him.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The "the economy was better under Trump" segment of voters is so depressing.

His policies were basically tariffs and random shiny object populist issues. His policies raised prices regressively while creating entire foreign industries that didn't exist before that now price-anchor US products through his tariffs and trade restrictions, such as soybean. Blew up NAFTA just to replace it with an almost identical arrangement. He alienated our biggest allies and trade partners. He pushed down interest rates even when it wasn't needed, ignoring the housing and stock bubble it created, because it made him look good.

It always reminds me how effective repeating a lie is - their "vibe" is that he's some great businessman, and it's enough to get their vote. They never check the sources for that "fact" (which are all Trump's own self-aggrandizing statements).

Even economic reason is absent with Trump.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I've got extended married-in family that are literally mexican illegal immigrants from the 80s who made a life in America. They have family in Juarez they see regularly. They believe illegal immigration is the most important issue, and think trump is best on it. Holy shit.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Everytime this comes up I think about that Trump supporter who was married to an illegal immigrant and was shocked her husband got deported.

"Nicky jam is hot". The fact that Trump didn't even bother to know about him when thinking he was a female onstage I'm guessing would have been the first red flag for him

I'm crying at the fact that this guy thought trump would be good for the economy.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 weeks ago

There is quite a lot to say about the neoliberal sabotage of American manufacturing capability, but the fact that people think conservatives have any interest in making those vanished jobs both come back and be worth having is stupifying.

I guess he wasn't paying attention when Trump treated Puerto Rico like shit during his term in office.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 3 weeks ago

We've been trying to tell you. When he gets your vote and gets into office, he's not going to give a shit about you. Listen to the people who already got fucked the last time he was president.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well republicans aren't good for the economy either

I'm sorry to say that, but I think that moronic statement is pretty much the US in a nutshell. I mean Trump is one of just two presidential candidates...and it seems to be a close election.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 weeks ago

I used to endorse trump, but then I realized that I actually never endorsed him because I have a fucking working brain and I'm not a stupid 'murican.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 weeks ago

what this election cycle has shown is that although it appeared to simmer down a lot over the last half century, racists just faded into the hedgerows simpson style to grow behind the bushes. trump has dragged them out into the open enough that ee can now see the depth in more detail
