What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

MODERATORS

First comment removed from asklemmy thread about who's good/bad re Israel/Palestine is apparently too nuanced and anti-extremist for snowflake dessalines. Ya gotta fuel the hate and extremism if ya wanna comment round tankie parts...

The linux ban was regarding a comment (pretty sure the OG comment was different) about Russian maintainers being removed from the linux project. Obviously you can't call out capitalist Putin's authoritarian dictatorship in the communist sub, because ML mods are pro-authoritarian and pro-dictatorship; not anti-capitalist... At this point I'm convinced most "tankies" are just PsyOps operatives.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 weeks ago

Oh shit! You weren't kidding. It's the actual creator of lemmy. What a sad little bitch.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

In response to the post title, yes but also you cannot say outright that you're pro-capitalist-dictatorship you have to pretend that the capitalist-dictatorship you support is somehow communism.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's communism because people get (rightly) punished for criticizing the state. That's the qualifier.

As sensitive bitch ass moderators ideologically committed to remaining sensitive bitches, they sympathize deeply with an authoritarian's emotional turmoil when criticized by his people.

Well technically the definition of communism is mutually exclusive to authoritarianism, the problem is that the important people self describing as communism have been authoritarians for like a hundred years.

Nobody should get punished for criticizing the state in a real communism because that means the state has more power than the people who should own it.

So the CCP is about as communist as the DPRK is democratic. Same issue with Russia. To them communism is a brandname.

Communism is unavoidably authoritarian probably partly because the whole ideology hinges on "just get the fucking revolution going, figure out the government after", which is so incredibly easy to exploit.

There's also the bit where the most minute considerations in favor of the collective vastly outweigh any individual, or group of individuals. And importantly; Becoming an individual, no longer representing the collective in the communist's eyes, is incredibly easy and quick. You're mentally exiled in the blink of an eye, just say the wrong thing and you're suddenly standing on your own. No longer one of the people.

It seems you have to keep your language very broad and almost have to speak in a different tone if you want to keep your status as part of the struggling masses, and not just "a guy".

Like you really have to sugar coat it and lay it on thick to get the communists to feel like you've earned sympathy and serious consideration, where you're immediately fucked again if you trigger their "No true Scotsman" senses, a fallacy communists seem completely determined to live by.

If you're just a guy unhappy with their governance, then that's literally all you are. Your concerns aren't the people's, your concerns are unimportant.

Again the definition of Communism is just "public ownership of the means of production". Anything else added onto the term is just your perception. It actually doesn't even need any sort of revolution at all.

While things like the "communism manifesto", commonly referred to as Marxism or Marxist Communism, specifically mention other forms of government and establishment as an enemy to communism, the definition of communism doesn't change. Same with anti-state communism such as anarcho-communism.

There is just no true scottsman in this case. It has never been done and in some specific examples never will be. If anything, technically, public schools and roads is communism, though. As was the Space Race.

I got banned too... It turns out that if you say that there are some Russians on a list of entities that Americans can't do business with, that's racist against Russians, I guess.

It's definitely an ethnicity, at least. The distinction between what counts as one race or another is often incredibly arbitrary, and there's not really much difference between hatred for a "race" and hatred for any given ethnic group.

As an example, people in Japan are generally discriminatory against Chinese people, which I'd still describe that as racism even if both have the same "race" of Asian.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Slav is an ethnicity, or at least an ethno-linguistic group, and it's much broader than just Russia. Russian is just a nationality. Russians (specifically) are not an ethnicity unto themselves. Czechs, Poles, Ukrainians and Bulgarians (among many others) all fall into the Slavic group along with Russians.

You can't be racist against a nationality. Maybe jingoist, but jingoism is typically identified as considering a particular nation to be superior to others, rather than inferior to others.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Ethnicity has no consistent definition, and the everyday use of racism can absolutely describe discrimination of a specific nationality. It's also just arguing pointless semantics regardless, especially when the original complaint is about russians not being a "race" which is an utterly made up term that means whatever racists want it to.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

There's often a lot of overlap between ethnicity and nationality, but they're not mutually exclusive. In this case, Russian can apply as both. There are a lot of non-ethnic Russians (non-Slavic, even) who are native to Russia, and there are linguistic/cultural/genealogical differences which separate Russians from other Slavic groups.

dessalines is one of the two creators of lemmy.

Man whenever piefed gets an ios app I’m switching I don’t wanna support these assholes.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Lenin claimed that capitalists would sell him the rope he hangs them with. I use lemmy to, among other stuff, spread that tankies are stupid & russia sucks.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Feel the same. I’ll never donate to those lemmy devs again

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

What frontend are you using that shows the admin/mod responsible?

[–] gigachad 10 points 2 weeks ago

This is the Voyager mobile app I think

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

I thought it was visible due an update or community config. I've never seen the mod name visible before (and considered that suspect after Lemmy was touted as a transparent alt to reddit).

Now that I'm aware this mod is actually the ml admin and creator of lemmy I suspect he wants to be visible so everyone knows how much of a big boy strongman he is.

On voyager go to your profile then click the three dots on top right then click mod log

I deleted my lemmy.ml account this morning. Very Russian, in English. Odd. I did not feel the community over there.
