The United States on Wednesday announced a broad effort to push back on Russian influence campaigns in the 2024 election, trying to curb the Kremlin’s use of state-run media and fake news sites to sway American voters.

The actions include sanctions, indictments and seizing of web domains that U.S. officials say the Kremlin uses to spread propaganda and disinformation about Ukraine, which Russia invaded more than two years ago.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on Wednesday announced actions by the Justice Department, including the indictment of two Russian employees of RT, the state-owned broadcaster, who used a company in Tennessee to spread content, and the takedown of a Russian malign influence campaign known as Doppelganger.

That's a nice idea, but about 10 years too late.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 months ago

Late, and feeble - they're blocking 32 domains.

They're blocking less than 1% of what piefed.social blocks.

Yeah guess it’s better that they don’t do anything at all.

10 years is pretty quick for government. I live in DC.

Romney tried to warn us.

seizing of web domains that U.S. officials say the Kremlin uses to spread propaganda and disinformation

Maybe they could start with X/Twitter and Facebook.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago

Uh-oh. I don't think taking away their main supporter will make magats very happy.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

Why did they wait so long?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Good, I guess.

It would have been better to start a year ago, though

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

They did. They're just announcing some of what they've been doing now.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Can't wait for them to domain-seize Facebook and Xitter

That's funny because NYT is pro trump disinformation source as well.

So you’re concluding that NYT is maga now because you don’t agree with how they covered Israel/hamas?

Jesus Christ.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well that might be overstating it. But their constant attacks on Biden while staying silent on Trump is them not fighting fascism. Pretty standard for neoliberals. Maybe I shouldn't single them out since I hate all the billionaire owned newspapers. THEY are the reason for creating the fertile ground that Trump could use with their decades and decades of shit reporting and disinformation and bias. They are the reason we can't and won't do anything against climate change.

I’m a huge Biden guy. Love him. NYT throwing him into the fire was fucked up but it did give dems a better shot at the White House in 2025. Unintended fortune perhaps, but Biden was losing it until he dropped out.

I sub to WaPo and NYT. Most of their stuff is fine but everyone once in a while you’ll get a jaw dropper. Hell, even CNN was coddling to Trump not long ago.

I’m a huge Biden guy. Love him.

How can you love someone who is so adamantly defending and enabling a genocide?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah the "unintended fortune" is right. Made me rethink what I thought of the NYT and look up where my sentiment came from. But do I really have to thank the NYT now for aiding in Biden's replacement? :D

AIPAC has spent $100m influencing US elections this year to ensure their preferred candidates win and we are supposed to believe Russia is the threat?

Yeah, money is politics is bad. Also, foreign governments interfering in our elections is bad. You discovered the principle of more than one thing can be bad at once.

Seriously? Your response to this is a whataboutism. And the topic is regarding Russian disinformation campaigns. Was the irony intended?

[–] [email protected] -3 points 2 months ago

Pointing out a more blatant and damaging form of election influence is not whataboutism.

Fuck it, nuke the Kremlin. Do it on putlers bday so his barely-human spawn turns to ash, too.
