Wait so now biden can appoint a bunch of judges?

Why would the GOP vote for this?

Am I missing something?

[–] [email protected] 63 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The judges are going to be phased in gradually over the next 12 years. Republicans figure they'll be able to shut down the Democratic party and democracy generally before then, whereas Democratic lawmakers are, with all due respect, fucking idiots who think Lucy will let them kick the football this time.

Makes sense

It's not enough! With the Chevron doctrine being abandoned and the Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy decision (where they basically ended the use of administrative law justices, forcing the use of full jury trials) the caseload of the Federal courts is about to skyrocket.

They're going to need to quadruple (or more) the Federal judiciary if they want it to be able to keep up.

The measure would direct the president to appoint new judges in six increments over the span of 12 years.

You see, this got the unanimous consent because the effects were spread out. This wasn't a Democratic plan to slam dozens of new Liberal judges onto the courts at once, it will happen gradually over the next 3 Presidential terms. Whichever party loses this election will get 2 more shots to stack the Federal judiciary.

Any plans to reform the Supreme Court should be done similarly.

Does this also apply if you want to expand the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Electoral College?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Expanding the House is the only thing that can't be done without an amendment. And if you look at the history of it before the 1910s when they fixed the size of the house at its current value, they increased it by little bits every few years, either after a census or after a new state was admitted

Yet no new asylum judges to help with the backlog of asylum seekers - 99% get deported. If you want to fix the undocumented immigration problem, that is one of the solutions (the other is get rid of the gang pericution asylum type, that is just "I come from a poor country, grant me asylum")
