Only Americans seem to say this. Why? I’ve seen a lot of couples at work and no one minds.

American here. I have worked with couples before just fine; both in an academic setting and in a professional one. The only thing that has been important is that there is some separation so that one isn't a direct subordinate of another. In the academic setting for instance, when one of the couple was the department chair, performance evaluations for their partner were handled by a different professor (the previous chair in that case).
