I have no idea why so many people are upset about Sync. There are so many FOSS alternatives. Just... don't use it? It literally doesn't impact you at all.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 year ago (7 children)

Voyager is basically as feature rich as sync and only continues to get better. That said I love sync. And its like being in a warm blanket again. I also don't mind supporting the developer with a one time payment to remove ads. The subscription doesn't bother me because he offers a fair alternative imo.

I'm not upset in any way about Sync. It seems like a quality app with a different business model.

What I'm actually upset about is people claiming open source apps are shitty and only Sync is possible to provide a good experience. That's just pure bs

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 year ago

This seems like a bit of a strawman argument. I haven't seen anyone say that explicitly—if they have, it certainly isn't common. I have seen people say they're willing to pay for a "higher quality app," and I can see how you could interpret the implication there being that FOSS apps are shitty in comparison. For me, though, I don't interpret it the same way, and I'd assume positive intent. Some people like Sync better than the other apps and are willing to pay for it. That's it, really.

I’ve been living under a rock, what’s the deal with sync?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sync for Reddit was a popular app.

After the whole API thing the dev started developing sync for Lemmy.

The open beta was just released.

The free version includes ads.

You can remove ads with a subscription, or with a one time payment of $20.

The Reddit ad free version was like $5, so the price increase pissed some people off.

Also the FOSS or die people got pissed off.

There are many great Lemmy apps, I say just use whatever works best for you.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

20$ seems pretty fair to me.

I bought sync for reddit over 10 years ago and used it daily. I had no issue what so ever paying. The app itself is nothing short of top notch quality and you can tell LJ is passionate about his work. He's continously updating the app and making improvements. Hell, you can spend more at a fast food joint vs the single one time payment option.

The Sync for Reddit Dev has released an app for lemmy. People are salty because it's way better than any of the foss apps that are currently out.

Sync for Reddit was a popular-ish third-party Reddit app. The dev has been working on building a version of it for Lemmy, and the surrounding community has been pretty excited for it. Recently, Sync for Lemmy was released, and there's been a lot of fanfare, conversation, etc. In my opinion, it's the most polished Lemmy client by far. Some people are annoyed that the premium features cost significantly more than they did in Sync for Reddit. The dev said it's to offset the smaller user base, which seems reasonable to me, but it's spurred a lot of arguments about the paid model.

Honestly I've seen at least 10 times as much content from people mad about the people mad about sync as I have from people mad about sync.

What are you goofballs fighting about? Your fav lemmy app? Just scroll in peace

[–] [email protected] 32 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Most of this community came from reddit. This is only as stupid as if the upvote arrow is red or orange.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The dress was black and blue either way.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

You shut your dirty whore mouth!

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

It's only stupid because it's clearly orange

I cant wait for round 2 when Boost launches

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Has he said he's making an app for it?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (4 children)

It's up for pre-registration on Google Play, and it has a community floating around somewhere. Not quite ready yet, but last I heard he's getting close.

Do y'all know your phone has a browser?

[–] karlthemailman 22 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It does. But I still use my mail app instead of going to gmail.com, I use my Spotify app instead of going to Spotify.com, I use the YouTube app, etc.

Sometimes a specialized app is just better. For me that's definitely the case w sync.

I bet half the people pretending Sync to be some malicious spyware have set Chrome as their default browser

Is there a stable FOSS app? I always favor that variety when available.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I’ve had zero issues with Memmy. Maybe one crash in the couple weeks I’ve had it

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

Another Memmy fan. No issues at all. Memmy on IOS, Voyager on desktop..

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’ve been using Memmy for weeks and it’s been fantastic. I was Apollo before, for comparison.

What about Lemmios, Avelon and Bean…

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

You don't have to pick sides.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (7 children)

Liftoff is the only app that does swipe anywhere to go back so it’s the only real usable alternative so far

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (5 children)

I tried Thunder yesterday and it also has that feature.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

So does Memmy, does it not?
