I wish my fellow Britts the very best in the outcome of those elections. And by best what I truly mean is left.

Kisses from France. We’re with you guys.

Wish poll days were bank holidays, gotta dodge politics at work all day thank god for the unifying presence that is Count Binface

It's easy to dodge the politics at work on election day.

"Where were you between 10am and 5pm?"
'Voting. Big queue.' burp

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

As a French I only learned recently from a Londoner coworker how you call your national days off.

“Bank holidays”

Why?

Anyway, good luck from the bottom of my heart.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

As the name would imply, the banks had to legally close. It took over pretty much every singular holiday like may day for example

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

I understand, but I’m kind of stuck by what’s implied. Like “money doesn’t make money today so everyone can stay home because the bank decides”

In France they are called “jour férié” from the old French “foirié”, literally “fair day”

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

Same in India. Wonder where we got it from...

Bank holidays are when banks are closed for business.

There are other holidays when schools or some other establishments might be closed but banks are open.

Well, sometimes I wonder why half of Africa speaks French… so I get your point. Sorry for that…

There are other holidays when schools or some other establishments might be closed but banks are open.

Are they still called bank holidays or do they have another name?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Are they still called bank holidays or do they have another name?

No, they're just holidays. Hence the distinction between those and 'bank holidays'.

I'm sorry guys but I don't think I can vote today. I just don't have it in me to fly to Britain, get citizenship and then vote. Maybe next time. I'm really sorry.

[-] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago

All I hear are excuses

[-] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

If you're a Canadian citizen, you can skip the "get citizenship" part. So maybe you can afford to reconsider in light of this new info?

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately the Canadian government discriminates against me because I was born in the Midwest and have never been to Canada.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I'm sorry, Canadians can vote in the UK elections?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Yes, provided they're living in the UK. Same with any Commonwealth country, such as India, Uganda, Australia, Tuvalu, etc. Even if they're just living as a student.

I think there were provisions in place for people who moved here before brexit to keep their right to vote. Apart from Ireland

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

No, its OK, all European citizens van vote in local elections where they reside in the EU. Wait, no.

[-] [email protected] 28 points 3 days ago

Good luck UK nerds.

I just want you to know, we're all counting on you.

Sweet of you to call me babe. How much did I drink last night?

[-] [email protected] 24 points 3 days ago

Polling stations are open until 10pm. Don’t forget to bring photo ID. Happy voting!

Good luck, dear ex-coloniser.

Sincerely, your ex-colony in south east asia

I do love how Rishi “Green Card” Sunak scheduled the election for American Independence Day. What are the odds that he uses his new* independence to move to California before the month’s out?

*🤞

[-] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

Good luck, everyone. Rise the tide and lift all the boats.

Our polling station is between the chippy and the offy - so vote, grub & bottle of booze to shout at the telly with!

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Sounds like my sort of evening!

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

I live in the only longstanding Labour constituency in Scotland; their only competition is the SNP. I'm a member of another party but the constitutional question basically overrides everything... kind of annoying to be bounced into voting for a specific party but I guess the longstanding MP has been doing a good job in my opinion.

Only if you actually receive your pack which reports suggest hasn't been as reliable this time around.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

I've done it for years since they changed my polling station without me realising and it was a scramble to make it to the other one on time.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

Were you waiting until 10pm to vote? 🤣

[-] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Polling station is in the middle of my street I wait till 9:59:30 to leave the house. Just for the rush

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Reminds me of the time I saved my Duolingo streak literally at 23:59:59. The app glitched out and displayed it as extended for both the day I did it on and the day the streak screen rendered on. A refresh of the app showed that it only counted for the previous day, so it worked regardless 🤣

Done.

I wonder if the country can get the day off tomorrow to celebrate?
