I can't be the only one that thinks a "french fries association" associating itself with obesity is kind of crazy, right? You'd think they would've thought this through better...

Yeah, I was surprised by this too. The character almost always has a box of fries in her hand in the manga, so it makes sense that she is associated with fries. However, like you said, if this is a trade association meant to promote fries, then it is questionable whether this is actually helping.
It's a little funny, but I don't see it as a misstep. It's probably just a popular (I assume) character who's associated with fries, and them being realistic in assuming that it's common knowledge that over-indulging in fast food causes weight gain.
They're in the top 10 for the lowest obesity rate worldwide. An overweight person isn't someone with a problem there, it's just someone who knows their food.
this feels like zelda fell into an alternate, mcdonalds-centric universe
The story is kind of a reverse isekai, where a bunch of fantasy characters end up in the real world and have trouble with modern fast-food.
So yeah.
Now I can't unsee Zelda in this character design...
I think an isekai adventure in McDonaldland following all the surreal tropes in their TV commercials would be terrifying!
No wonder the company binned the whole cast of characters over a decade ago.
TIL there is a Japanese french fries association, which by necessity means there are french fries associations in one or more other countries.
I tried to look them up and didn't find much, but I did find this:
The Seven Principles of the Japan French Fries Association:
-
Love French fries and eat them at least once a week.
-
Eat all the French fries you are served.
-
Do not pressure others to like French fries as you do.
-
Do not persecute those who dislike French fries.
-
Do not blame French fries for making you fat.
-
Do not use French fries to commit a crime.
-
Honor and respect those who grow potatoes.
Do not use French fries to commit a crime.
Now I'm curious
When you see a warning, that means someone has to have done it...
Like France?
Would they call it the french fries association though? Or just the fries association?
The French wouldn't degrade themselves by using English.
They'd call it something like L'Association Pommes Frites
But they'd surrender if anyone objected.
If they sell the potato-based pun shirts, I'm in!
Note that the character's name, Elfda, means "I'm an elf" or "it's an elf"
