I think the one thing missing from this guide is that there are communities I’ve subscribed to from my “home instance” here on Lemmy.world, but which I can’t find an easy way to browse from the homepage. Eg: I just wanna read Gaming content right now, and that’s all in this one community on another instance.

You can if you want but if you just want to participate in discussions on different servers (instances) you don't need multiple accounts, the servers all "talk" to each other, you can see posts and comment freely wherever with just one account (that's what I'm doing).
Sure, if you want. They're separate sites after all. Is there any particular reason you want to do this though?
It's possible, with an account on each one.
It's not needed, you can always search for the link to a community to join it with the one account you have. I.e. to join https://beehaw.org/c/gaming, search for this link and your server will find the community.
