Holy shit, I can't even imagine the amount of mods that will get erased. There were so many fan-mods, maps, minigames, models... Fucking Nintendo...

every couple months there is a new burning of the library of alexandria

[–] [email protected] 40 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I get the sentiment here, but it is absolutely hilarious to compare gmod content to the library of alexandria.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Also wasn't that library's burning not as bad as everyone says? I thought we had copies of most of the stuff for some reason. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There was never really "a burning" that destroyed it in one go. Over many years, there were numerous factors that caused many of the works to be lost. Some were lost to smaller fires, some were stolen, some just disintegrated due to age. If no one bothered to copy them by hand to have more than one copy, that was that.

I can hear the klaxxon

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

The library shrank over a long period due to the change in patronage, from rulers friendly to academia to some that had other priorities. The writings were taken to other places that were more interested in them. There was indeed a fire at some point but it only burned part of it and anyway by that time the collection was a fraction of what it used to be.

you... you think much of it was any good?

really?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago (1 children)

All for the profits of a few people.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There is no profit being made by harassing some innocent modders. If anything, projects like these are free advertising for Nintendo.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago

Won't you think of all that missed revenue because of IP misuse? It's just as clear as with piracy: every unlawful download is 100% a sale the could have gotten, but didn't . It's simple geometry. We don't need proof, because piracy bad. This IP misuse is just opening up the gate to further infringement, thus undermining their core business.

Stop publishing IP if you hate remixes and the global culture engaging with it you egotistical sack of people haters @ Nintendo

Apparently it's not even Nintendo, but trolls. Just that this is such a Nintendo thing to do that GMod doesn't want to even risk it

EDIT: So the domain is owned by MarkMonitor, a service that monitors for copyright infringement and sends DMCAs. Nintendo HAS used them before. So that clears up any confusion there

[–] [email protected] 30 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Where do you get that from?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

They got it from a twitter post that never bothered looking up who owns the domain. The domain is owned by Nintendo of America Inc not some internet troll.

Search for mm-nintendo.com

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Ah, thanks for the correction

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Do not blindly believe twitter posts.

https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup

Search for mm-nintendo.com

Registered to Nintendo of America Inc.

This IS an official nintendo domain.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

I know, I just provided the link, thanks for the clarification though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

I wonder if the "it's just trolls, not Nintendo" misinformation is actually disinformation also coming from Nintendo...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago

The domain is owned by nintendo.

Look up mm-nintindo.com on the icann search: https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup

[–] [email protected] 41 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Fyi, you might want to add a notice to your post that lets people know that it appears to be part of an ongoing series of false-dmcas from someone using a fake Nintendo-lookalike domain.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

This is not true. Look up mm-nintendo.com on icann yourself to see who registered it.

https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup

TLDR: Nintendo is the troll here.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago

Perfect representation of Nintendo.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

The post says:

No, they still are. FacePunch believes they are real DMCA take downs, so they're still going to take down the workshop addons out of fear.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (4 children)

One of these days a Corp is going to push hard enough they get their rights stripped away for not meeting the 'to promote the progress of science and useful arts' part of the copyright clause and i'm starting to wonder if the big N is going to be the winner.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Copyright and progress of science and arts is an oxymoron in my view.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 4 months ago

Ya gotta remember that at its inception, at least in the US, copyright had 2 things going for it:

The duration was limited to 14 years, not the death of the author +95 or fucking whatever it is currently, and that much of that duration would need to get burnt up in duplication and distribution of the work, all of which had significant costs associated with it. Hundred year long guarantees with unlimited instant reproduction of a work and instant mass distribution functionally for free would have been anathema at the time, and this kind of abuse of the system goes directly counter to the original as-written intent.

Too bad those 'originalists' in the courts only use that concept to suppress women and minorities instead of maybe picking up a small W with it here.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 months ago

Lol, those rules are for you, not for Nintendo.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

I actually feel like if Nintendo keeps this up, ar some point down the road, a majority of people are just gonna be done with them.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

This wouldn't even be GMod's responsibility? Valve owns the steam workshop, so anything violating DMCA should go to steam, not GMod. It's not like GMod themselves are hosting the content.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Gonna fully sweep the workshop based off a claim that 'might' be Nintendo but won't take down servers glorifying one of the worst points in human history

[–] [email protected] 31 points 4 months ago

History can't sue you into oblivion for copyright infringement.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago

20 years they've had to DMCA this. They should lose the right to do so after that long.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

Why? It's explicitly unrated online content not covered by any terms.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

They are still beholden to copyright, just like you would be if you hosted a rom distribution website

If you are notified then you have to remove the problem content

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago

Because it's probably trolls, not Nintendo

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, time to move away from the workshop.

Can we go back to svn links for mods?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't think the Steam Workshop is the issue here. I'm glad it exists, and direct downloads or snv links are still a reasonable alternative for mods that can't be hosted on the Workshop for whatever reason.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

True the workshop is pretty dope.

Just centralizing all mods in one spot is a bit iffy for situations like this.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

13 yo me had so much trouble with SVN. Thanks for the flashbacks.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Hope you eventually got the stargate mod working.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Is garrysmod.org still a thing?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Apparently not.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Good! Nintendo is a tiny indy company, and you shouldn't be mad at them for this. How else will Miyamoto and Sakurai put food on the table? Think of poor Nintendo and all the billions of dollars these gMod creations cost them!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 4 months ago

So many SFM videos that use Link and Mario models straight up ripped from their games will no longer be made. :(
