Please also check out vegantheoryclub.org for a great set of well-run communities for vegan news, cooking, gardening, and art. It is not federated with LW, but it is a nice, cozy, all-in-one space for vegans.

We ask that the you have an understanding on what veganism is before engaging in this community.

If you think you have been banned erroneously, please get in contact with one of the other mods for appeals.

Welcome

Welcome to c/[email protected]. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • embedded images of text require alt-text
    • posts with an image of text should have a transcription in the body or alt-text
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. No brigading, either off-site or on-site. An incitement to brigade includes two elements: a call to disruptive action and a specific direction outside of this community in which to take that action. Exceptions include:
    • Calls to boycott.
    • Calls to in-person protest of a government, high-profile individual, or company/organization.
    • Votes provided they have a sufficiently broad target audience or provably effective controls against vote brigading.
    • Petitions.
  8. All Lemmy.World Terms of Service also apply.

I hope photos of cooked animal flesh will one day be banned on all respectable Fediverse servers.

@nm @vegan

In the past, I've requested CWs for meat. Because seriously it is pretty triggering for me to see a giant, bloody steak while I'm just casually scrolling through my timeline.

I'd love for that to happen. But I fear as long as eating animals is as accepted in society as it is today, this'll take a long time.

Fight the good fight though, my dude.

Lots of downvotes from people presumably not a part of this community

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

That's the fun of the local feed

I really wish Facebook would ban pictures of dead animals people have hunted. It's horrible when it comes on your feed.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Same for Instagram! People just sharing how much meat they eat as a family and how proud they are that it tastes good..

Hate it. One friend of mine on Facebook I unfriended when they posted a bunch of geese he had shot, and when I objected he said "well I love ya but if it flies it dies". Like WTF is wrong with your mind? How is that a sport?

@nm @vegan I hope so too, also just photos of dead animals, period. The pictures of douchebags with the animals they killed, etc.

My local paper put a photo of a dead deer on the cover once for some story, and I still can't understand how something like that makes it through a whole editorial process, but I guess that is the world we live in. For now. :hope:

Same, same. Whenever I go on YouTube on my phone, I always get slapped with at least one carcass ad. Like, no, thank you, I didn't particularly want to see a mutilated animal corpse.

Uncooked animal flesh too. Just no thanks to all of it

Should there be a vegan instance? That way there would be no meat there

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@Blaze Yes, there is the Veganism.Social instance, which I am posting from

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Oh, that's nice, but I mean a Lemmy instance. Couldn't find any using lemmyverse.net anyway

There is also vegantheory going strong now

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

It’s banned on vegantheory and veganismsocial

I hope it will be without suffering when I die someday. After that, if it made ecological sense, I wouldn't mind if my body was eaten by whatever or whoever.
Suffering is bad for all animals (including humans) so reduction of suffering is an important goal. Yet, nature doesn't work toward this goal ; only humans (+some sentient beings?) do.
Unfortunately, this is not the only goal we have to pursue.
Would you mind being eaten ?
