Nah it goes back much further than the 80's, when we're on the topic of the age of American Christian Nationalism I like to break out the only Barry Goldwater quotes I know, the first of which was said in the 60's:

This lot are indubitably amongst those actively calling the teachings of Jesus "weak" so yeah, definitely not Christians.

It's meant to diffuse any potential argument because they strike first and that leaves the reply from "us" to sound like the childish "no, you!"

It muddys the waters so much that you're left with the "both sides" bullshit and that allows you to fall back on choosing whatever side you wanted to in the first place instead of coming to realize that maybe they really are the bad guys.
