This is what I really came to enjoy about the books - that he is always punching above his weight limit, and it shows. Perserverance through pure will and being smart about things (within reason lol).

That and the perfect balance between the seriousness and smart-assery

The books sound interesting, and Ive added to my reading list but I do feel Storm Front is a bit of an unfortunate name

Don't worry, it refers to using actual thunder storms for evil magic stuff.

Yeah Butcher is pretty good about being anti-racist even if he can be a bit of a creep. Which is a very good thing, considering the characters who start showing up in later books and reveals about certain skulls.

Based on his other two series, I’d contend that while Dresden is a creep at times, Butcher himself doesn’t seem to be one.

(X)

I do appreciate him dialing it back for Cinder Spires. Maybe he can stick the landing with the latest plot developments in the Dresden Files but I doubt it.

Is there more than 1 book out for the spires?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Second book came out a few months ago.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Yeah the second one came out in 2023. Haven't read it yet personally but I assume it stayed the course from the first one.

Yeah… it’s taken on a certain meaning since it was published. I’ll warn you that the first 2.5 books are the weakest of the set, not bad; just immature writing. (The reasons make sense if you know the story behind them being written).

Jim Butcher has stated that Dead Beat was written as a reintroduction for new readers to coincide with the debut of the TV series. That way new people could try a book in the series that was more representative of his writing. It is still one of my current favorite series though.

The TV series was a mistake, was so excited when I saw it but man it fell flat.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The series is pretty okay, I think. Some nice, light, cheesy entertainment, nothing wrong about. You probably don't want to watch it after having started on the books, and if you do, it might be best to pretend it has nothing to do with the books and is its own thing.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

I was heavy heavy into the books when I saw it. I guess looking at it in the light of "this has no relation to the books" it wasn't bad, but it was a bad adaptation

Why so? I'm not up on pop culture

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ah. Seems like a perfect way to reclaim the term from them, then?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Bro, the fucking Nazis started that one. They were huge on "storm" imagery, that's part of why you got SS lightning bolts, stormtroopers, etc.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

The lightning bolts are actually a fake Nordic rune created by Von List for "Victory." The actual rune means "Sun." Himmler was basically a psychotic D&D nerd. He had plans to completely eradicate any religion in Germany except his made up Nordic religion.

If Harry still has 4 working limbs you know you're not very far into the story.

Damnit I just started watching. Hmph

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago (2 children)

The show was good and cancelled way to early. The books are phenomenal.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

I had low expectations for the show and was still disappointed. I really disliked it. Love the books though.

Word. It wasn't very true to the books, but it had its own charm that was worth it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Wait, who is Jim?

I've watched the series and read like three or four of the books (I hear they get much better later on, but by book three or four, it's just... kinda repetitive...), and, who is Jim?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Oh. Jim as in Jim Butcher…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

I wish his middle name was 'The' like some old school cockney gangster.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'm having the surreal feeling I would expect if I were reading something about Star Wars and seeing someone ask "Wait, who is George?"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

Sure, it was kind if a "d'oh" moment, but, honestly, if I'm assuming you're talking about some character in the lore, I could still see myself asking "Who is George?" when Star Wars is discussed.

I named my first born son Dresden because of these books. No lie. I still get a lot of "oh so are you German?" questions though. Philistines

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You could have just named him "Harry" instead. Or even "Harry Blackstone Copperfield" if you wanted to be more on the nose about it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

While Harry would have been apt based on my own hair levels, I just preferred the sound of Dresden. I have a fairly common name and it was not so much fun being "First name last initial" growing up so I also wanted to give him a decent semi unique name that wouldn't also fall in the realms of Tradegeigh or Traeiystiean shit

Also my wife started whispering it in her sleep the night I suggested it so that pretty much tied it.
