Hello Danes! (:

I'm a young Portuguese who loves Denmark very much and I have the ambition to visit Denmark one day (maybe even live there).

I'd love to know what Danes think about Portugal and the Portuguese. Both good and bad haha So I'd appreciate your participation!

Obrigado! (:

Edit: By the way, if you have any questions about Portugal or the Portuguese, feel free to ask 😁

Nice passionate people and a beautiful country that is unfortunately having a hard time politically and economically, with a lot of immigration from (mostly) Brazil. Portuguese people also seem to be everywhere in France and Switzerland, especially a lot of young people moving away permanenty in search of a better life (i dated one of those some time ago). I have an overall good impression, but before i met my ex i don't think i had ever thought anything about Portugal. Neither positive or negative.

Sardines. Expensive. But they got me started into canned fish. Now I watch reviews of sardines: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOh0i2J19hEJXA4r6aIU2gw

Lissabon or Lisboa is probably my favorite European city! People were so friendly and laidback and the food was delicious!!

I've been twice to Portugal and really like it there. People are nice, weather is good, good vibes, and the food is really tasty. I still dream about the porco preto I got in Braga.

I can really only complain about the hills in Lisboa.

I have an online friend from Portugal. It took a while to get used to his way of speaking that made him sound like he was angrily yelling and shouting when he was actually just passionate.

Don't have any exposure to portuguese people outside of him so he forms the basis of my entire impression. Loud and passionate :p

I don’t know that much about Portugal, but I have a good friend who’s half portugese and half danish. She grew up in Portugal and moved to Denmark in 2011 with her family when she was 12, and we became school friends. They left Portugal because of the economic crisis and because her parents couldn’t find jobs there. So when I think about Portugal, I often think about that the economy is worse than the danish economy and that it’s harder for young people to find jobs. But I also think about how beautiful the Country is -and Lisbon looks amazing! And I think about the enormous ocean waves, and that many people travel there to surf :) and I know you have amazing food! My friend’s mom always talked about the portugese seafood being way better than the danish.

I also find the language fascinating - especially the nasal vowels, and the fact that many sounds of your language have similarities with slavic languages like russisan or polish.

What do you like about Denmark and What do you like the most about Portugal?

Yes, things aren't easy here... A lot of young people (like me) are increasingly considering emigrating, and there are a lot of them!

On top of that, there were elections here yesterday and an extreme right-wing party managed to elect 48 MPs... so I don't know what the future will be like.

But thank you for your compliments about Portugal (: you're always welcome to visit us! You can always come here in the summer and enjoy our climate and beaches (:

The short answer is most Danes probably think of it as a smaller Spain of sorts. Sun, wine, football and the likes.

I've got good impressions of the country. I'm on a gymnastics team where we're all Danes and one portugese guy. He's pretty chill. I'd love to visit sometime, maybe in 2027 for the Gymnaestrada.

I hope you like it here! Tip: come here in the summer, it's the best season to be in Portugal!

Cheers to the portuguese guy there :p

I don't think most danes think one way or the other about Portugal, for the most part.

For myself I think that Portugal looks like a nice place, that I would like to visit, and I think portugese people aren nice and welcoming like most people.

I also think (totally based on my own biases, I haven't really researched this) that it is a kind of poor country (economically), because of your recent history (the last 100 years or so). :)

But I have never heard anyone have any bad thoughts about Portugal or Portugese people in general. :)

Honestly, most of the time the short answer would probably be "we don't". We're too busy making fun of Norwegians and hating Swedes

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

RealFakeLlama at 2024-03-11 23:46:57+00:00 ID: kug2s74

Or being besties with norwegians when we have a chance to redicule sweden together...

And ganging up with both sweeden and norway to express how much more better and cooperative and friendly we are than almost every1 ells.

And then back to bashing each other when there is no one ells to gang up on...

Ahhh, scandinavia, i love the strong bond of family... uh, i think i forgot some scandinavian countries... hmm.. if i forgot i dont think they are important πŸ˜†

Funny thing is, I can think of several nasty names we call the Norwegians, but the worst insult for Swedes is just "Swedes"

I don't want to sound ignorant or anything, but what's the beef between the Danes and the Swedes? Historical reasons?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Blusset at 2024-03-11 23:26:50+00:00 ID: kufzm6m

Historically Denmark and Sweden have the record for most wars fought between two countries.. Nowadays the "hatred" is more like sibling rivalry/teasing

Ah, boa noite.

Portuguese people aren't on our radar. Brazilian people are a bit more dominant, especially in Aarhus.

Really nice fun people with a cool language and great pastry. A little jealous of their beautiful country! Don't know that much more about it, never been there but I'd love to.

What are the downsides? I hear the economy isn't very good but that was a while ago

mikke_and_i (OP) at 2024-03-11 23:23:13+00:00 ID: kufz1g8

The economy here is very bad... very low wages and absurdly high housing prices. Many, many young people are considering emigrating (myself included) because in addition to the bad economy, we are very badly governed. The far right is on the rise here! Just yesterday they elected 48 MPs from a far-right party (just to see how things are going and yesterday was election day).

We're the ones who are jealous of Denmark πŸ˜‚ a country with high salaries, a good quality of work-life balance and so on.

Portugal is a beautiful country and I recommend you come and visit in the summer! However, we are very badly governed, because if we weren't, we'd be one of the best countries in the world to live in.

Love Denmark (:

I visited the mainland back in 2018 and went to Madeira in 2022. I think it's a beautiful country with kind people and great food. Sintra in particular is easily one of the most gorgeous towns I have ever been to.

Most Danes aren't very familiar with Portugal's cultural intricacies and just see it as Spain's smaller brother. There isn't any negative prejudice or anything like that to be concerned about.

Hope you have a great trip when you visit up here, cannot recommend the weather these days though.

Generally very little knowledge. Havent met many tourists from your country here in Scandinavia (used to be a bartender a place with many tourists), but generally have a positive feeling towards you.

The few tourists I met, less then a handful, people thought was Spanish.

Heard you serve lupini beans in bars? They are yummy and hard to find around here.

Thank you so much! I'd love to visit Denmark soon!

And yes, we serve lupins in the bars! It's quite common here (:

I think it was a great vacation i had there. Didn't really speak much with your people because of the pandemic but had a great time learning to surf in Lisbon, going to your colourful castle and going on a port wine tour near Porto.

Can only speak for myself... but...

Mostly i dont think about Portugal or portigeese ppl. Except when ppl mention them, or speak spanish/portugeese in game chat (cannot see the difference in the languages, so I always just have to guess where teammates are from). But on more general terms, i guess you guys seem like the non football crazy and non uproar over catalonia wanting to become independent, or not 'tomato farmers have over irrigated again so now there is a drought and they somehow blame either eu or their parlament'.. so... the non crazy iberian guys? Sorry. but it seems spain just steal the limelight. And the french. And the italians. And english. Ect. Not being on the news actualy seems like you are doing quite well for yourself nowadays. When crazy is in the air, not hearing about you is actualy a compliment.
