Hej, allesammen!

I am a first year student in Denmark and I've been here for about 6 months now, living in Sønderborg.

A mixture of factors like seasonal depression and being away from home has got me really on edge recently. I really want to change this fact and start feeling comfortable here. I'll be studying for the next 3 years after all 😃

I've been studying the language from September and, while I'm not the best, I can say it is quite interesting, so I'll keep on going. I think one of the major factors that will make a difference is to embrace the culture and get immersed. What in your opinion would be the way to do this? And also can you give some recommendations like books, activities, music, food, just everything in general?

I'll be very happy to read your replies!

Thank you for your time!

DR has a huge library of tv shows, movies, podcasts, radio shows, and so on, either in Danish or with Danish subtitles.

I recommend Reading The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen. She is one of my favorite Danish authors, and really popular at the moment (she died more than 40 years ago).

In Sønderborg, you are close to such an important part of Danish history - hopefully you can visit some of the sites and learn more about the part of the country that has been Danish and German amd Danish again!

If you want to watch sports popular in your region, try to get tickets for ice hockey, handball or speedway.

Welcome to Denmark! You chose an awesome city yo live in with beautifully nature and history all around you. If you are historically interested I would recommend you visit the Dybøl Mølle museum. The island of Als has a very interesting and unique story.

If you want to meet Danes you could volunteer somewhere, red cross, study buddy or something. You can visit the local volunteer house in Perlegade or look at their website: https://sonderborgkommune.dk/frivillighedens-hus

Another possibility is joining a club. I know they have walking/hiking clubs, sports clubs, gymnastics clubs, music clubs and so on 😊

if you want to truly immerse yourself and do some fast track language learning join a keep fit class - dance related is best. My advice though is do not go near the front. I learned from experience that not fully understanding instructions and being generally rubbish, was highly amusing for the class but was also very disruptive!! - I quickly moved to the back! Highly recommended for learning to not take yourself too seriously and a great way to meet folk!

You can watch the absolutely most important Danish tv-show: Matador: https://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matador_(tv-serie)

Also these black comedies also tells you a lot about Danish humor: Blinkende lygter(2000), Adams æbler (2005), I Kina spiser de hunde(1999).

Book: Meter i sekundet (a very funny novel that also tells you something about our famous’ højskoler)

You forgot the most important: Mænd og høns (2015).

I would also recommend Riget (seasons 1 and 2) by Lars von Trier. It is a great exposition on the relationship between Denmark and Sweden (and hillarious).

I’ve never seen it. Read some bad reviews.

Ok. I like it, and I actually usually don't like these newer Danish movies (like Blinkende lygter etc.).

How are you doing on socializing? Get out and meet people. Insist on speaking danish. That will help you so much!

If you're into board games, card games, Warhammer or stuff like that, they have a really nice and cozy boardgame cafe in sønderborg called "Æ bræt". People there are super friendly and social and there's a lot of international people as well. You can just hang out and get a beer or coffee or join people for games or partake in their activities. Awesome place! :)
