I wonder what software was used to make Rui. It looks like it is capable of 2d sprites in 3d enviroment like blenders grease pencil.

I'm not sure but I'd guess Blender grease pencil. Blender does have some 2D spriting capabilities.

It's true: In some RPGs, the first character does have trouble leveling up because side characters are more effective in combat.
Usually I get the opposite problem - if I was the one playing Alicia would level up nicely but the three stooges would be stuck as supplies carriers.
