Im just glad to have found an alternative. Though this will take some time getting used to. I like the decentralized aspect.

I literally just joined. I think the major instances should put some sort of "Reddit Refugee Guide". I just joined on kbin, and I'm pretty technical so I'm naturally interested in how things work and figuring it out myself, but I think the vast majority of people won't be, and will just want to know how they can do the basic social media features.
CGP Grey's "What is reddit" comes to mind.
It's cool isn't it? Have you checked out the rest of the fediverse yet?
I'm just about ready to delete mine.
Went through today and used a program to edit all my comments then delete them, deleted all my post as well.
Once I can figure out how to easily export out all my Saved post then I'm out completely
I'm considering this, as well.
Reddits handling of the charges rollout and dev communication has left a bad taste in my mouth.
I feel like they have fucked about. And I'd like to give them a small slice of "find out".
I realise it won't have a huge affect on internet permanence (I know the datahoarders have been going ham on archiving), and I doubt anything I've contributed is actually being referenced by anyone.
In the event you or anyone else does decide to wipe, export your saved post and leave Reddit. I did the following;
-
Used the program "Redact" to delete all my comments and post. This specifically edits the comments to a blank comment first, then deletes its so nothing is left behind.
-
Went here https://eternity.portals.sh/ to export my saved data into a JSON file. From there imported it into Excel and saved that
Going to delete my account come the 30th
Good luck everyone
For those interested this tool doesn't need an app installation, just drag a button to your bookmark bar (it's 100% Javascript).

https://redact.dev, for anyone looking for a link!
Great tip to thank you! Will be doing that post haste :-)
Nice, thanks for the details.
That was my plan for the weekend: figure out a tangible exit strategy
Thankfully I didn't have too many save posts, so I just copied and pasted my favorites into pages documents. If I ever win the lottery, I have the step-by-step guide provided by u/BlakeClass!
Reminder to folk to erase the content of their comments too, reddit shows up a lot in google searches thanks to the content people post. It'd be good to take that away as best we can. I'm going to be deleting mine later today too.
I've deleted my account too! (both main and some throwaways I had)
I'm waiting until the 30th, although I've barely been on reddit since joining Lemmy. It's not in the hopes of sending a message or anything, I honestly think that's futile at this point, but I might make a comment here or there pointing people to Lemmy as an alternative.
I'm ready to delete my Reddit and Twitter accounts, but I need to find a K-pop community in Lemmy or Mastodon before since those places were where I used to get the news.
The other things I'm interested in are already covered ☺️
We have:
kpop magazine
https://kbin.social/m/[email protected] magazine
https://kbin.social/m/[email protected] magazine
Maybe that helps
Oh, man, I need one too
I got banned for suggesting that we all agreed what to do with Nazis 80 years ago. Guess some people weren't pleased with that.
i got a lifetime ban on a 15y account. Why ? Some guy said I couldnt read, so i said Go outside fatso. And that was that.
But, like, didn't we? Where's the lie?
Hey there! Will be deleting my Reddit in a few days, just posted some goodbyes to a few communities (linking to my Beehaw and Mastodon) but by Sunday they will have done their job. Goodbye and good riddance, Reddit.
Oh, that's more than I did. I just dipped. Here's hoping I didn't make someone feel snubbed.
I think there’s a good chance anyone would understand with the disaster Reddit’s about to become!
You... You guys had friends? I don't think anyone would even think to wonder where I went.
Side comment... How many walked away from reddit accounts will be flagged for the "dead redditors" sub when people just suddenly stop posting?
Same here. I'll miss the Star Trek sub as that was very well run but there's one on Lemmy that will hopefully pick up
For anybody about to do the same, who wants to hang on to their Reddit history for whatever reason, you can request an export of your account data here:
I'm stealing "hive five" lol
You are welcome to it. Pass it around.
I get no longer posting, but why delete though? This was a site that you poured hundreds of hours into, and your knowledge in niche topics could help someone (hell even your forgetful future self) in a desperate web search.
I can't speak for op but one reason I've seen mentioned is users don't want reddit to keep historic data. Reddit will profit from that data by selling it, using it as corpus for training etc.
They might, but you will still be helping people, and if at a later date a court mandates that the authors of the training data be compensated for their actions, or if the corpus is released into open source repositories -- then I'd still call that a win for humanity.
That is a fair point.
Personally in an ideal world, I would like to export all of my data from reddit before leaving, and then if later someone wants to host all of the dataset under a permissive open source license like I believe stackoverflow or wikipedia do, which is accessible to search engines, then scrub+anonymize my dataset and upload it there.
Obviously the issues with something like this are people uploading doctored data to poison the training models etc.
I don't really have any niche knowledge; I'm basically an idiot. You make a very fair point. It just doesn't apply to me.
Unless something changed, deleting your account shouldn’t delete the content you created so it shouldn’t make much difference in that regard. There have been scripts that went through your history and would change / delete every comment though.
Yeah, me too, thanks to your post. It didn't hurt at all.
Yeah, it became easier the more I thought about it.
Instead of deleting mine, I plan on selling it. Can do much more damage to Reddit like that instead of just deleting it
Hey so did I!
Well done. Set yourself free.
Good luck to us all!
