Lucid Motors drops the price of its cheapest EV by more than $8,000::Lucid Motors is lopping thousands of dollars off the price of its most affordable electric sedans as it looks to boost demand after a disappointing year of sales. The rear-wheel drive version of the base model Lucid Air Pure will now start a $69,900, down from the previous price of $77,400. The more powerful Lucid Air Touring model -- which offers all-wheel drive performance and roughly 50% more horsepower -- will now start at $77,900, down from $85,900.

I mean, I want one but that's still unaffordable for me and like, a vast majority of people. Beautiful car, though.

It’s like we are entering an economy where you are either rich and can afford basic things like a car and house or you are poor and feel like you are being kept out of this world.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 6 months ago (2 children)

This is by no means a "basic" car though.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It not just this car though. Everything seems to be going that way.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Possibly, but you moaning that you can't afford a premium vehicle from a luxury car maker is a bit silly.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (2 children)

He is referring to how everything is becoming premium. A model T in 1916 was $350. Inflation adjusted that's $11,000. You can't buy a new car for $11k. Now of course a new car does so much more. But that also means there have been no productivity gains in 100 years to offset the cost of the added features.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. If companies could get away with making a car as unsafe as the model T, you’d probably see quite a few $10k cars on the road. But as it stands today, most cars are required by law to have all sorts of safety features built in.

As our standard of living and safety goes up, so does the price of goods because more is required to go into R&D and manufacturing.

If companies could get away with making a car as unsafe as the model T

That's why I claimed there are no productivity gains if those safety features can't be added at a lower cost than 100 years ago.

According to the Bureau of Labor and stastics, productivity has increased almost 500% since 1950. That means it should be possible to make a Model T today for less than $2,000. That leave $9,000 for safety improvements.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

You could probably make a model T today for 11k though.

Besides, there are definitely death traps that are only road legal in places like India that you can buy for 11k

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

The market decided it's not much of a luxury vehicle either.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

When it comes to cars there are cheaper options available aswell than a brand new electric one. I would never pay that much for a car even if I could afford it. That's almost the price of my house.

Where do you live that your house is less than $100k? Many would like to know.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

105k€, Finland. It's a tiny 70 year old granny cottage 10 kilometers from the city centre.

Spent about 70s on Zillow and found this 4 bedroom home for under $90k. Finding affordable homes is quite doable. You simply won't be living in the middle of a city.

And yes, it isn't a mcmansion or a penthouse apartment. It's a perfectly livable 4 bedroom home, with a garage, central air, and very affordable taxes.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

What are you talking about? Didn't you see? It's down $8k. We can ALL afford one now. Hell, I'm gettin' two of them.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Keep on not spending money in cars gang, let’s get them prices down!

[–] Ghyste 19 points 6 months ago

What money?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Boy I'd hate to be the last person to buy the car before the price drop. That happened to me with the PS2 back in the day and it sucked, that was like $200.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

With Tesla, if you hadn’t taken delivery of the vehicle yet, they dropped the price they expended you to pay at pickup.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Yeeeeaaaahhhhhh. I bought it at 25 bucks a share. Ugghhhh

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

In the same boat. I'm contemplating just cutting my losses at this point.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

I think you have time to maybe not lose a much. The Saudis can fund it easily until it's popular at least over there.

[–] burrito 4 points 6 months ago

I feel less bad now with the Fisker I got at $6/share.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

💎👏🏻?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Ha, $3.97 cost basis here. Average it down 😂

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago

Nice looking cars

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Let me know when someone makes a convertible sports coupe/roadster EV with more than 400bhp for under $30K (and not made by Tesla). That's when I'll start shopping for an electric vehicle. I'm so fed up with all these boring sedans and SUVs with only three "color" options: black, white, and gray.

Also, my HOA will have to install chargers in my condo complex as well, cause I refuse to be like those rich idiots who have to sit in a parking garage for hours at a time while they wait for their Tesla to charge.

The MG4 XPower has 435hp, a range up of 385km or 520km, na wide range of colors and a price of 40 500€ before tax credit of subsidies.

So it's getting close to 30k with subsidies. Still not a roadster but MG is preparing the MG Cyberster that should be available in Europe this summer.2024-mg-cyberster

Yay, more amazing cars that'll never make it to the states. I appreciate you trying to help, though.

Dropped the cheapest model by $8,000, down to only $70,000

For some reason I don't think that's going to make sales skyrocket

Electric vehicle seem to be coming a comodaty should push down global prices.
