I'm researching the possibility to move to Denmark to work as an IT Architect. (Preferably @ TLG.)

How difficult is it to get vegan foods in Denmark? I don't know if veganism has a strong foothold there. How much do the vegetables, nuts, beans/legumes, and fruits cost (on average)? Are there any vegan specific restaurants?

No problem at all. All supermarkets have different vegan products but I mean, Denmark still isn't particularly cheap.

Regarding restaurants and cafés it of course depends on your location but that's what we have HappyCow.net for.

Vegan in Denmark is as easy as it is in most western countries these days, there are specific restaurants that are vegan only and many restaurants are amending their menus to assist and ensure that there are options for all. I am the only meat eater in my family and we have never had any issues finding vegan and omnivore options when we want to eat together as a family. Not sure where you are thinking of living, but Copenhagen is becoming a globally recognised vegan foodie hotspot.

On the question of pricing - where in the world are you from? That may give a little more context. I am currently living in Australia and so can tell you that I would trade Danish food prices over Australian prices any day of the week, but I know many Danes are currently struggling with the cost of basics. It is cheaper to buy imported Bananas in Denmark than it is to buy ones grown locally in Australia.

Danish produce prises dosen't depend on where OP is from?

But whether or not OP would find Danish produce prices expensive might do.

Yes - but pricing is not related to OPs origin

OPs question was around pricing of vegetables etc and I asked for context where they were from to answer with more context.

How would you answer the question without this context?

  • "Danish produce is expensive" Is it really for someone if they are used to paying nromal prices in Iceland, New Zealand or Australia?
  • "Danish produce is cheap" Is it for someone that is used to paying Asian prices?
  • oranges are cheap this week, only 18kr per kilo - The person hasn't migrated to Denmark yet, and may not understand currency, exchange rates, relative cost of things etc.

Not answering question and making fun of our dismal animal welfare record?

23% of all piglets die of hunger and being squished to death because of crap husbandry in our industrial farming hell.

That's 10,1 million dead piglets each year. 27.655 dead piglets each and every day, year round.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

opgivende at 2024-02-14 07:46:00+00:00 ID: kqcw0ue

Those piglets are the lucky ones, though. Far worse to actually have to live as a pig on Danish farms.

Easy to get plant based foods - price depends on where you come from - and what quality you want.

I buy nuts, dried fruit & granola here - so you can see examples of prices here

Example of supermarkets where you can also compare prices

Berg-Hansen at 2024-02-14 04:51:20+00:00 ID: kqcf7kj

Prices depends on where you are. Not where you "come from".

Yes you are right, wording is unclear/incorrect.

What I wanted to note - since OP asked about prices - that if you come from somewhere where food prices are low and move to somewhere where prices are high - then you will need to allocate a larger portion of your budget to food.

It's impossible to be vegan in Denmark. At least for IT-architects that cant make simple web searches.

Not sure if the other user is joking about getting you to Sweden, but in honest, it’s true. Denmark is behind Sweden and Norway with the selection, variety, and availability of vegan and vegetarian food, particular in the “meat-like products” or meat substitutes.

You didn’t ask about those, however. In terms of nuts, Denmark has a quite contested nut tax, so the prices in those are actually a bit higher than otherwise. In terms of beans and legumes, you can get them canned in regular stores, as long as you are fine with getting that exact version. For dried beans, you might need to go to health/hippie stores, and that will be pricy.

You don’t mention where you are from, but if you are from any country where the suns shines more than there, you will probably be a bit disappointed with the taste of fresh vegetables or fruits like tomato, bell peppers, zucchini, berries out of season. Vegetables like beets and potatoes and various type of kale/cabbage we do fine, and fruits like apples and pears are fine. This last point is based on knowing expats in both Norway and Denmark, who are not even vegan, but still quite dissatisfied with the fresh vegetable/fruit selection and quality.

The excess taxation on nuts was removed some years ago actually... Prices just never went down. 😏 Dried beans/legumes are cheap if you buy them wholesale from bazars and small middle eastern stores. Often they're not organic though, so it's a trade-off...

Signalsfromthenoise at 2024-02-14 04:43:27+00:00 ID: kqcrip2

If you're fine with cooking and preparing a lot of your meals yourself, you should be fine. Or if you don't mind spending half your salary on varying qualities of restaurant options. I live in Aarhus, I'm an omnivore, but I often sample vegan options and I'm not impressed. If you don't mind including some vegetarian options here and there, you should be a lot better off.

The vegan selection in stores is quite small / non-existent compared to other countries. Legumes and nuts are covered. Vegetables and fruits 90% don't taste much. Vegan restaurants only in Cph. You have web shops where you can buy food.

i am not vegan my self, but we have a decent amount of vegan/vegan-friendly restaurants especially in bigger cities, most supermarkets also have a decent choice of vegan products and meat/dairy alternatives, fruits and vegetables are generally fair priced, but has gotten more expensive the last few years because of inflation (covid and the russia-ukraine war has really put prices up) nuts are kinda expensive but thats just the way it has always been here

so in general denmark is a decent place to be as a vegan/vegetarian, especially if you have a normal income

if you decide to move here, i wish you luck and hope you enjoy our cozy little country

Not difficult at all. The challenge is gone. Capitalism has totally ruined the experience. Now it is easy and I wander in a daze through the supermarket. Our food bill is half of what our all-eating friends and family have. Stuck in unbearable lightness of having optimal health and sleeping like a rock every single night.

Just the last 10 years too. Like I remember starting to eat more vegetarian and basically the only replacement you could get was dried soy flakes and cocoa from Naturli

Now there's so many things and I fucking love it!

I made the choice not to eat animals. You did not. Are you going to argue that all choices are valid and equal? I beg to differ. I stand with the animals against an abusive and greedy industry. If we had a relationship with farm animals like we had many years ago this would be a different discussion. We all make choices. Each and every day.

It’s very doable. The Danish grocery stores are hated by most expats for their selection, but I like them. They have more organic food than any other country I’ve been to. But the ready made dishes, like vegan patties or schnitzels, are often non-organic. Groceries are pricy in Denmark. Nemlig.com is an online grocery store you can check out. Prices are a bit higher than discount stores.

I eat vegeratian 5 days a week, and honestly it's pretty easy. If you live near an asian grocer (or lidl) it'll be easy to get tofu, seitan, and soybeans, and legumes can be bought in regular stores both canned and dried.

Also we have some amazing soymince fron Naturli, as well as a whole range of not milks (and a really good vegan cocoa)

Honestly the main hurtle, which it probably is in a lot of countries, is how big babies non-vegans are

To get a licence to stay in Denmark for longer than a tourist visa, you need to, under official supervision, regularily consume fried pork belly with parsley sauce (Denmarks national dish), marinated herring with curry egg salad on rye bread and eat copiuos amount of red rhubarb porridge with heavy cow cream (and then correctly name the dish in danish). About 40% or more of your calories shoould come from these 3 dishes. This is done to expose undercover swedish agents. If you dont, you will be subjected to a trial by surstømming. All 3 dishes are incompatible with veganism, unfortunately.

It’s very easy to be vegan here, the supermarkeds have many vegan options and there a LOT’S of restaurants. No problem at all.
