It was the dawn of the third age of mankind. Ten years after the Earth Minbari war. The Babylon project was dream giving form. It's goal to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call. Home away from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanders. Humans and aliens wrap in two million five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal, all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace. This is the story of last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

In celebration of the show’s thirtieth anniversary, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment (say that three times fast) is releasing the series on Blu-ray this December. All 110 episodes have been remastered in HD, and the set also includes Babylon 5‘s pilot movie, The Gathering.

...

The set will be available December 5, 2023 at your favorite retailer and, in the U.S., will cost you $99.99 for 4,730 minutes of Babylon 5 goodness.

Fantastic. Too bad the rest of the film collection didn't get a remaster.

Yes, that's a bit of a blow. Will they release a complete complete collection later on?

I hope so. In any case it will be nice to get the full series in HD with less compression than streaming. Oh, and I hope the commentary from the DVDs makes it to the Blu-ray.

Were any of the films good besides In The Beginning? I hated 3rd Space and Call to Arms. I don't remember if I saw River of Souls.

Frankly 3rd space and Call to Arms were my favorites.

This is incredible news. I’d heard rumors for years but I didn’t think they’d actually do it. Makes me wonder if my recent DS9 rewatch was premature…

Even though I already have them, it’s prudent to get the physical release too. The more money it makes the more likely WB are to do more.

I've also seen numerous reports of the DVDs failing.

But yeah, we need the films redone too.

The DVDs? I’m pretty sure when they were released back early 00’s, each season was the top selling box set. Then eventually they released the full collections, and released several times etc.

Do you mean failing in function or sales? The DVDs are quite old at this point.

I mean, people report that some of their discs no longer work.

[–] clay_pidgin 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I'm not surprised.

Yeah, this is bought.

Wow! I was using Nvidia Deep Learning to try to upscale Babylon 5 into a barely acceptable 720p at 16:9. This is a dream come true!
