Short version
My new apartment is less than ten feet away from the apartment buildings on either side, and the neighbors to one side are about the same age as my housemate and me (late 20s). It seems weird not to acknowledge them when we're standing ten feet and two glass panes apart, so my housemate and I would like to hang jokes/puns in our living room window (across from their kitchen window) to break the ice.
My question is: are there any downsides we're missing here (anything that could make this not-funny for our neighbors)? What sort of (non-creepy) jokes would you want to receive from your neighbors? Would you try to get them to engage? (It's also appropriate to tell me if you think this is a bad idea.)
A couple details: we wouldn't be interfering with their view (all they can see, and all we can see, are the external walls of each other's buildings. Neither building is pretty, so really, anything would be an improvement on the view). These would not be obnoxiously large or bright signs, nor would the same sign stay in the window for long. We're both artistic, so the signs would likely include sketches that related to whatever joke/pun we were hanging at a given time. (Again, not an eyesore.) As far as I can tell, this either ends in: a) them ignoring the signs (what I expect), b) them replying telling us to stop (we would) because for some reason, they prefer to look at our ugly building, or c) them hanging their own replies (ideal, but not expected).
