I'm not pretending to be any expert here, just armchair opinions of ways that we could maybe make these types of events more sustainable and bring more benefits to the host.

I'm just thinking why'd we need a huge stadium to run around in a circle, but truthfully I'm sure it's very complex.

Presumably because lots of people want to watch the people running around in a circle? I don't think it is very complex!
