Does it actually work to "protect" wildlife, or does it kick the can down the road, and maybe mess up the imbalance that hunting sometimes gives since we have already fucked up the way predator/prey interactions, food sources, and general habitat can support populations?

Does no good to spend the time and money if it doesn't actually do something that is a long term benefit. The link is basically a puff piece, and there's issues it doesn't cover. I'm not familiar enough with the group, and have zero knowledge of the region, but I've seen attempts to "protect wildlife" just turn into overpopulation that drives human/wildlife conflict. Which makes it harder to make things happen on a legislative level. Look at what happened to the red wolf population, and the people there actually supported the program.
