Hi people, since we see more and more complaints regarding old movies being not politically correct anymore, I am getting more and more concerned about some purchases I made some years ago. Specifically, there is a set of local movies in my mother tongue which I bought and therefore want to download them in case they are removed/changed later on. How can I do that?

Linux cmdline tools preferred, sharing is no consideration, so I am not concerned about digital fingerprints.

It's almost always going to be easier to obtain them through other means.

In the past, I've had good luck with StreamFab. It's expensive and Mac/Windows only, I believe. I had a smallisj use case and was able to automate mac address changes on a VM so could get by with the free trial. Been a while, so I can only vouch that it used to work well, not sure if anything's changed since then.

There was a pretty widespread crackdown on widevine decryption keys last year, iirc. That's the sort of thing you'd be looking for if you wanted to continue searching out other tools or possibly roll your own.

I've given up on any direct download methods. It's a game of wack-a-mole and the players often don't share their tricks anymore, or charge a pretty penny.

Try OBS screen recording if you want a free option.

For anything that doesn't work with, I've just gone the extra mile and now have a Streaming Stick plugged into an HDMI Splitter and then piped into an HDMI capture card, which then pipes into OBS. My setup can only do 1080p SDR, but that's enough for me.

Okay, so OBS looks like the only feasible route then, thanks!

Not sure specifically about Amazon but there's always the hole between the video cord and the monitor where output is unencrypted. Do these movies not have a purchase and download or DVD option out there?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's usually not unencrypted though. You need a special device to defeat the encryption (HDCP).

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago

You don't. That encryption was cracked long ago and your average HDMI splitter will bypass it completely.

They are from the 90s, so DVD would be my plan B. However, that would take significant effort to hunt down, so I wanted to check other options first

Analog for the win! 😁

Redfox Anystream. Nothing higher than 1080p though.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

1080 is totally sufficient, I'll look into this, thanks!

I mean you could record through a capture card.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

True but considering the costs, I would rather just buy the movies on DVD and rip them

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Are you sure someone hasn't already posted them on one of the torrent sites?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Not sure about private trackers but on public ones, I did not see them anywhere. Also chances are not that high since it is old material that never got translated into Englosh or other languages, so quite niche.

As long as you have hardware acceleration turned off you can screen capture with obs
