I'm talking about those that play the same games 2 or more times. You already know how the game plays and you know how the story goes. Wouldn't you rather spend that time playing a new game? I've only got so much time to play and a I have huge backlog. I never found myself picking an game I've played already over a new one. I'd like to know your thoughts.

You’re telling me you played Skyrim once?

I've never done back to back playthroughs but I'll definitely revisit games I've liked a year or two later for another playthrough. It's like watching a movie you've already seen before but really enjoyed so you watch it again.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Exactly! We all want to play older games we used to play as kids or games we enjoyed, so we know it will be a fun experience again, But a back to back playthrough maybe a second playthrough is understandable but a third? Like what the hell were doing in the first two? And I've seen many people so it

There's more to a game than plot

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)
  • Run optimization.
  • Because I genuinely enjoy the game.
  • Because certain games take longer than others and I'd rather just run through something short, especially when I have too much shit going on in life to keep up with a larger game.
  • Because I don't give a shit about the story and knowing it ahead of time does not change my experience.
  • Because sometimes it's more comfortable to re-run through something that I know, than starting something new that I don't, especially when I'm sick / fucked up / have other shit going on.
  • Because I want to.

Great points. Thanks for the input.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I'm a completionist in most games I play. The first run is purely to absorb the story and subsequent runs are to see and do everything the game has to offer.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (2 children)

You've never re-watched a movie?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

OP only went down each slide once as a kid.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Goes down slide and gets out clipboard

Slide #98 - smooth landing, rough start. 7/10.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

OP never steps on the same square twice

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Different builds, different strats, challenge runs, speed runs, nostalgia.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Same reason people rewatch movies or tv shows.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Sometimes I just feel like playing something I know I 100% will enjoy, also I have shitty memory so it's like playing for first time for me cause I already forgot much stuff about the game. Also some games have different routes, endings that can make experience different

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

But wouldn't you enjoy it less than the first time though?

I've re-played GTA V a lot, mainly because all I had for the longest time was a PS3...
It's kinda like watching friends or seinfeld over and over. comforting?
I now own a PS4 level gaming PC and am playing, surprise surprise, GTAV...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Ah comfort. Never crossed my mind.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Same reason you re-read a book.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I meannnn, Retry a dish cause the first time you ate it, it was very good. Retry a game cause the first time you played it, it was a hit.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

It's fun and well made

Nostalgia

The developer has added more content since last time (minecraft, stardew valley etc)

The engine was open sourced (OpenTTD, RCT2)

Having better hardware than the original playthrough

It's fun and well made

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Why would I play a game even once if the act of playing it wasn't enjoyable?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Sometimes it's a case of skill and mastery. The game might still be hard, or the higher level of skill developed may allow for different play styles, or because it's pretty fun to style on things that used to give you difficulty. Sometimes like a book, film or TV show the story or the artistry might remain enjoyable. I'm also generally of the opinion that if a story relies on you not knowing what will happen for engagement then it wasn't very good on the first place.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

For me, old game is old as soon as I've played it. If I haven't collected something in the initial run through, bad luck, I'm not going back, I don't have time. I've done collect-a-thon achievement hunting in the past and I can no longer be bothered.

The only 2 games in the modern era I have replayed are Skyrim (launch & special edition, and no, I'm not going back for anniversary edition) and GTA V (launch & just because I had completely forgotten the story - hint. it was shorter and slightly disappointing to what I remember).

The same reason people reread books, rewatch movies/tv shows or go back to a nice restaurant/bar they've been to before:

You enjoyed it once so you go back to enjoy it a second time.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

For the same reason I rewatch movies I enjoy, or relisten to albums, or reread books, or travel to places I've been to already. In some cases I enjoyed the the first experience, and every subsequent time, I notice something new. Sometimes the experience is different depending on what new life experiences I've had or what kind of headspace I'm in.

Other times I want to just sink into something that feels familiar and cozy. I'm not looking to dive into a new experience with the time commitment that may go with that. I just want something I can go in and out of on a whim just to relax.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I replay games because there’s not many I like

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Why do people rewatch films they like?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

You tell me. I'm being serious.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

NG+ is a big motivator for me (if the game mechanics are good). Other than that I replay games where I like the story. And sometimes it just takes something familiar before diving into a completely new game.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I will use Baldur’s Gate 3 as an example. I have done 4 playthroughs and am on the fifth. I have never approached combat the same each game because as I learn more and more there is a lot of “what if I did this?” Going on. Also, not really possible to do the entire game in one playthrough because there are a lot of companions and they have their own quests. Incredible replay value.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago
  • You enjoyed the first time and want to play through it without pressure of figuring out shit
  • Game is so artistic/detailed it should be taken in multiple times to fully appreciate (ie: Red Dead 2)
  • Different playthrough paths/builds give vastly different experiences in story and/or gameplay that can't be consumed in a single playthrough (ie: Witcher 3, Elder Scrolls)
  • Raised difficulties conjure the thrill of a harder challenge sharpen your skills by making you learn mechanics/refine your game iq instead of ramming through the first time or gamers looking to achieve it (ie: Devil May Crys, Soulsborne)
  • Speedrunners
[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I used to do that as a kid because I had to wait a long time before getting a new game.

Nowadays I have Game Pass and I can get more games. I have less time to play too. So I just do it when I feel I can get more out of a game.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Do you only listen to a song once?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

It's like comfort food. Sometimes you just want to switch off the world and immerse yourself in something familiar that you know you will enjoy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Because of FF X.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

a good example of why, are the bioware games before anthem.

all of them have multiple classes, dialogue choices which leads to different outcomes. most of them are okay, but some are really impactful to the point of affecting the ending.

mass effect is my favorite of them all. mass effect 2 is the game I personally replayed so many times in my gaming life. a few runs on the ps3, then on the pc right before OG mass effect 3 release, then recently(the whole trilogy) on the legendary edition on pc.

god, I'll probably replay the whole trilogy again before mass effect 4 releases, if I am still around whenever/if ever it releases.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Chasing that same feeling again, it's easy when it's something like Bloodborne but yeah if it's a sony Singleplayer game with lots of cutscenes it can be tedious. It happens a lot that in my head I can't wait to play Uncharted 4 again but then I lose all motivation when I have to watch cutscenes and slowly walk during the first hours.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

You have got to be trolling.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

It's not that often I will replay a game. When I do, it's for one of two reasons. I greatly enjoyed it and would like to experience it again or it was relaxing and I want mindless relaxing. The other reason is if there's been a content update or I've purchased new dlc and therefore new things to experience.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Did you ever watch a Movie a second time?

Or, did you ever do anything a second time?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

The same reason people rewatch movies and reread books. Entertainment is not lost just because we know what's coming and desperately require something new, which is extra funny considering how few new things actually feel refreshing, unique or original.

This isn't rocket science.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

OP going out with friends like "Pizza? No thanks, I already had that once when I was 9 years old."

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Same reason you might replay a multiplayer game or re watch a movie or re read a book.

Because you enjoy it.

And that’s assuming the game is the same every time you play it. Many single player games are not the same experience every time. Much like multiplayer games aren’t the same experience every time. Heck. Static movies and books can change experience over time based on how you view it in each watching/reading. Whether it’s for pure entertainment or to analyze it. Or if your own life experiences make you re evaluate the media and what it means to you.

Let’s say for mass effect. The basic story is overall the same every time. But your class can change the gameplay. The difficulty can change how you play. The paths you choose through the story can change. How you play the earlier games may change based on what you know of the later games.

Thus it’s never quite the same experience.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

The game is just that good. Really got nothing else to tell ya. Wouldn't be playing it otherwise.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

The same reason I watch films that I've already seen before

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

"After eating a single McDonald's cheeseburger I'd decided that I had experienced all burgers had to offer and therefore decided never to partake in a Burger again"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

What people said already, also a side benefit is the huge money savings from buying new games full price when you have old games that you can enjoy as much.
