I have proof of this being a part of the application process. When asked in an email to the company on what grounds they asked about my relationship status they gave an absolute bs excuse:

"The purpose on the question is not focused on your relationship status. It is more about the support form your environment that can influence your stress resistance at work. You can treat this question as a question about the support from your closest friends, family, etc. The forming of the question can be a bit confusing, but this is the only purpose of asking about this."

So I also have the company admitting it in writing. I was not "chosen to go forward with" them. This question would have been an outright illegal and basis for a lawsuit in Finland. If it is not legal, to which agency/governmental institution should I contact regarding this issue?

It is normal to ask questions of this nature. During our hiring process (as part of the personality test) we screen for stress resistance indicators, such as how often you exercise, how you view yourself and your way of working, your thoughts on work-life balance and so on.

Nothing like hiring a bloated, diabetic stress magnet.

What, are you hiring astronauts and fighter jet pilots?

How you handle work-life balance is important, especially in these hybrid working ways where the lines can get blurry if you are not careful.

I'm 100 % remote.

Done my 7.40 hours and now I've stopped working for today.

But how that factors in regarding exercise habits and stress factors? And on anecdotal evidence, work life balance and many hours have little to do with whether or not you end up stressed. A shit working environment and culture and management and project planning and colleagues does.

Congrats on turning off your computer, many people are not as self disciplined.

Actually, many stressed people it is not the work that is the cause, it can just as well be the home situation.

Asking about how people handle such situations and how they balance things is fair. One of the recommendations is exercise, so if they are proactive, it will likely come up in the conversation.

Nobody suggested asking are you are exercising 0, 1-3, or more days a week

No. Stress is not related to any given job description. You can get stressed working in a kindergarten and you can get stressed working as a software developer. Stress is one of the most common causes for long term leave. As such, there is no argument to be had for not screening applicants for stress related factors.

That being said you should have a larger focus on reducing stress factors in the workplace than hiring people who are more resistant to stress. One just doesn't exclude the other and we are already testing everything from their math and language capabilities to different types of intelligence tests as well as personality tests. We even test if people are prone to lying.

Again, there is no reason not to screen for factors that directly limit your reliability as a colleague.

Completely agree with your second paragraph.

Lol, human resources are a cancer on the workforce.

Absolutely nothing good has come from it.
